Jay Rock - 90059

I've been hyped for this for so long. Top Dawg Entertainment has to be my favorite label in terms of talent on their roster but they completely butchered the promotion on this.

All of that is forgiven after hearing the quality however. I've heard someone say this is the 2015 Good Kid Maad City and to be honest and while that is a bit of a stretch, it has a similar feel. It's so nice and clean. I'm still not sure about the chaotic sound of the song 90059 itself but everything else flows really well. It won't out sell a lot of the other albums this year but personally this is one of my favorites so far.

The quality is definitely there but I just don't think Jay Rock is quite that popular just yet. He simply doesn't have the body of work unfortunately. I mean compare and contrast him to Travis Scott and his singles have gotten a considerably smaller reception. I can't find money trees deuce or Gumbo on soundcloud now but Antidote has nearly 28 million plays now and Rodeo is on track to sell between 80 - 100k and both of Rock's singles had considerably less plays.

The hook on 90059 is next level shit. Thank God I was able to bare it because the rest of the song isn't bad. Really liked Telegram, Fly on the Wall, and Gumbo. Overall, the album is alright.

 

Album is only projected to sell like 17k, it's criminal but to be fair he isn't that big and he hasn't done much for like 4 years where the hype was at it's peak following his money trees feature. Not to mention TDE fucking up the release & promo. Despite that though this is one of the albums of the year for me, love me some Jay Rock.

Apparently both Schoolboy Q & an Isaiah Rashad have projects submitted to TDE, hope we get both before the year is out but I kinda doubt it. TDE gonna TDE.
