There is basically a new scam going around where ban evader users are suppositively selling rare names such as this one - http://www.sythe.org/name-sales/1866997-selling-name-play.html
When asked to prove that they have the name, they log onto the website. The real account name is "PIay" not "Play" Which look exactly the same on the website and in screenshots. They refuse to use MM's, and will not show the name in game. (because obviously Piay is addable in game and easily seen) Users are easily tricked by this and fall victim to it (I know a few) and I think if there is a sticky warning other new users about this kind of scam and how they can avoid it that it could save a lot in potential scams.

Edit, here is the picture. As you can see they are the exact same.
The capitalized I will look like a lowercased L so people are easily fooled.

2 completely different characters ^ The only way people could see the I is if they right click the name in game or on their friends list. Then it looks like "I"(A huger, more obvious one) instead of l

"I" doesn't look like "l" in RuneScape at all, atleast in Oldschool. It is similar to the I and l you read here

If you are concerned about the legitimacy of someone's sale (if they have the name or not) you can ask them to meet with a mod in-game to verify it, and if they deny that... don't trade with them

Yes I agree, but I think there should be a sticky warning new users about exactly that. They won't know safe trading habits if they're new.

Yea, that can't happen if the scammer is screensharing the fake name. Once the victim buys the name it's all over.

I support if this is a new up and coming scam as OP is saying. A sticky like "Beware of Fake/Misspelled Name Scam" to get people's attention would be really useful and here's why: If this was an old scam then yeah sure, people are gonna always be sure that they check the name before they buy and make sure that it is spelled correctly with the proper letters. However, before I saw this thread (and I'm sure this is true for many more) I would never have thought to check the letters in the name or even ask for any sort of that verification. It isn't even an element in the trading or thought process of a buyer.

People will be fooled by this scam if they aren't informed about it as it is new and no new traders would think twice about it. Don't try any "Oh you could just do X or X" or "It's your fault for not checking X". If you're trying to make the site a safer place, a simple sticky (which was made for this exact reason) is due in this case.

There isn't a single legitimate reason to not support a warning against a new, difficult to avoid scam.

    Explain this to me..

    Scenario:
Person claims to be selling "fluffycakes" but is really selling "fIuffycakes"
    person buying "fluffycakes",
person buying "fluffycakes" types in the account name change .. "fluffycakes", (if this name is taken - it wont let them take it, as the scammer is selling "fIuffycakes") - the person buying wont exactly type in "fIuffycakes".

    (Assuming seller has both names)
If the seller is claiming to sell "fluffycakes" (really selling "fIuffycakes"), wont the person buying add "fluffycakes" and see what the name has been changed to (and see fluffycakes or fiuffycakes as the last name) (assuming the seller tells them what name it has been changed to - seeing as you cant put the same next names- should be a suggested requirement in ensuring how not to be scammed?)

I'm not sure if that made any sense.. just an outsider view.

The scammer will want an account sale, not an actual name trade. I'm sure some MM's would be too blind to see the I on it too, unless they logged into the scammers account.

Frankly if they are refusing to use a MM, anyone with half a brain would back out instantly and drop a TWC request on the potential scammer.

Those who actually are foolish enough not to do this are probably not going to spend the time reading a sticky either.

But in the end it doesn't hurt anyone except the scammers so I'll support it.

Just because you don't want to use an MM doesn't mean you should get a TWC.

I don't understand why this is always the excuse. Josh made this thread, obviously he knows not to trade with them. He's asking for a sticky so NEW users who aren't familiar with the market are warned. You can't just expect everyone to trade perfectly. People make mistakes.

I'll support on that basis, but just define it to those account name sales, rather then name trade sales, did get a bit confused on that :p

Nope, you're just sketchy af, and highly suspicious, not my words:p
