I currently have Time Warner and want to know if buying a 16 channel modem is worth it, my speeds are currently 50 download 5 upload.

Will the modem bring better bandwidth or less latency?

 

Not necessarily. Internet problems can be caused by poor/cheap service by your provider, or problems with cheap hardware, whether it is your modem or router. Upgrading one of these doesn't necessarily mean that you will get a noticeable improvement.

A different modem won't give you better speeds. The speeds you get are capped by your ISP. The only way to increase your speeds is to pay for a higher tier package, if one is available.

I have a question off of this:

Does a better router really increase effective range of your wifi?

Like if I drop $100 on a 500ft range router will I see a better connection

 

It is always worth a try.

 

Unlikely however unless he's using a modem from like 2001.

Chances are he's using the modem provided by his ISP, which may be an older model, but still capable of reaching the speeds for the package which he pays for.

 

YOu need to call your internet service provider first and determine if the change will make a difference.
