It's really just feel and durability. I play a lot of MOBA's and MMO's and I have the tendency to 'slam' on the keys when I'm trying to rush and get my abilities out. With a normal keyboard, I run the risk of breaking the keys or popping off one of the little rubber switches (I honestly have no idea what these are called). Not saying my keyboard isn't invincible but it's definitely more solid than a normal one.

Then it comes to the feel when you're typing. I love having the light response that my brown keys give me, and I have some friends that absolutely love the clickety-clack of their blue keys. It's really all personal preference as to which key you like. I believe red keys register the switch halfway through the keystroke so you never have to actually bottom the key out, leading to faster typing speeds.

Mainly durability. I've have had the Razer Black Widow Ultimate Stealth blue edition for almost 4 years now and it's still fully functional. I've spilled water on it many times and within 2-5 hours of drying it, it still fully functions. Definitely a good investment.

    Mechanical keyboard.

    I love mine.

High quality durable materials, nice settings for the back light, and the kind of key stroke and feedback/click you prefer. Multiple ways to make it sit and you can re-route the usb cable in different directions. Think it also has programmable keys and you can press 20 keys at the same time and it'll register them all.

Think I paid around $140, and I've been using it for 2 years now. Totally worth it for me, going back to typing on membrane keyboards is as bad as going from a keyboard to tapping on a touch screen.

    Mechanical keyboard.

To be honest, I spent a lot of time researching mechanical keyboards and the different switches. By the time I picked out a switch with the tactical feedback and resistance I wanted - I had chosen the one that rarely anyone designs with: The CherryMX Clears.

I finally found one company that makes a decent keyboard with it, but I still have some residual issues with the keyboard itself (the keyboard itself has issues). Overall it just feels much better than what I was previously using - a Logitech G19 and just feels so much better while rolling my fingers through the typing strokes.

I don't get any sticky keys (except my Q, yet to figure out why) and the pressure is just right so that when I am gaming, I know exactly what button I'm pressing at all times. The other thing that is really great about the mechanical keyboards is that you can pop off the keys to clean (easily) and change them out for new keys if you feel so much inclined to do so.

    I've been gaming forever.

I would never purchase a non mechanical or non backlit-keyboard.

Ive tried a mechanical keyboard once when i was playing League of Legends, the thing i loved most about it was how responsive it feels. Its definitely worth it if you have $ to spend :)

They just you a nice feel when you click, I personally love cherry MX red they feel so clicky. You'll feel the difference between a mechanical keyboard and a non-mechanical.

    Mechanical keyboard.

your elo will go up 3000%

More durable (Mech keyboards can take a lot of abuse)
N-Key Rollover (This means that each key is scanned completely independently by the keyboard hardware, so that each keypress is correctly detected regardless of how many other keys are being pressed or held down at the time)
    They feel amazing
no need to bottom out to register a key (depends on switch)
Not all of them are loud -

Razer made their own switch when cherry lost their patent. I'm pretty sure the switch they use is just a modified blue switch
