Why do people scam?

I just want to hear your thoughts on why people scam.

The thought arose due to someone being banned, me thinking they were actually somewhat trustworthy and would develop into a prominent member of the community, especially after having donated quite a large sum of money to this site...

The logic behind being dishonest with people for personal gain is beyond me, especially when the potential for greater future gain through being trustworthy is much more valuable long-term wise, monetarily speaking as well as standing in the community.

My personal belief is that in the moment I think people believe that what's before them is an opportunity too good to pass up, and that shit, they might as well just scam and never look back. It's all virtual, no one's going to hunt you down and harm you (most of the time at least... lol). But what I don't understand is why exactly... the GP doesn't last forever, the currency, and eventually you'll probably grow up and come back around to a community such as this, and if your past does catch up with you, RIP. Your reputation is forever marred.

 

Scammers have their reasons, and some even think they are doing the right thing.

Let's not make this into a discussion thread, because we can all agree scammers don't belong on sythe.
