Punk Rock (and its many sub-genres)

Lou Reed was meh, but Stooges and MC5 were great. I really dig the butthole surfers too. A professor in a film class of mine was like 'Okay guys something different today' and he played us a bunch of different music types and asked us to classify genres. He played Kick out the Jams last and was like "What genre is this? I could argue it is early metal or punk." We got into a big discussion about how people recognize genres differently and how it related back to film, culture, and genre. It was cool.

Im not a huge TVU fan either but i dont really see punk or rock music in general being at all what it is today without their influence.

i mean pretty much everyone who heard them started a band and rock music hadn't ever had the same darkness, aggression or dissonance presented by its lyrical themes and instruments that TVU introduced.

 

I love all forms of punk, especially early hardcore punk like Black Flag, Bad Brains, Dead Kennedys, etc. Nowadays I fancy myself some good ol' Folk Punk. Here's some good radical Folk Punk shit for those who have never heard.

But yeah I love these guys. They still do shows around the US if I'm not mistaken. I'm going to check out that band you mentioned as well.

 

Butthole surfers are from where I grew up, ive met quite a few old burnouts with all sorts of stories of Gibbys lunacy. I love their early shit. Later 80s and beyond they lost me.

My nigga . Mischief Brew is my favorite folk punk hands down. Heard his punkier shit with the pagans? Their album kinda shows his transition from angsty teenage punk to mischief brew.

Any preference on your Black Flag? Most everyone I know HATES rollins but I love the way flag actually progressed while he was in the band. Their later shit gets more rotation than >damage for me.

Ah I see now, I misread your original post. Looks like I have some posts to edit. No, I haven't heard their newest, last thing I heard from AJJ was Candy Cigarettes and Cap Guns which was pretty solid. What's the new release? I'll give it a listen.

 

Christmas island is the name of the album. Its a solid release. I really like kokopeli face tattoo and coffin dance off of it.

They made another good album before it sounds like you may of missed called Knife man. Its great. Definitely worth checking out

I like old blink lol. Cheshire cat and dude ranch are still good. Things went downhill from there.

You sir are welcomed here. Like that you suggested Damaged II, kinda weird song. I really love late era black flag, I know most people talk shit about Henry Rollins but that was certainly their most creative time.

The album meat puppets II opened my eyes to a lot if other genres, they will always be some of my favorites

 

Checked out Black Flags new(ish 2013 or 14) album. Actually pretty impressed, they had chavo (an early singer featured in everything went black, of Redd Kross fame) sing and it reminded me a lot of late era Rollins. Pretty good. Rancid also released an album recently, it more or less sucks. Sounds pretty good but Tim and Lars really copped out on the lyrics.. They are AWFUL.
