So since I have started trying to drop weight recently I have been using the myfitness pal app, which recommends I eat 1770 calories a day to lose 8-10 lbs in a month, but with working out it reccomends I eat around 2200 calories daily, I have been eating around 1400 daily for the last 17 days, is this too low of a deficit or should I keep it right around this level?

Don't worry too much on the numbers of a site tell you.

Pick some calorie level ( 1700 for ex ), and eat like that for 2 weeks. See how much weight you lost. Adjust from there, if you are losing too fast.. eat like 100 calories more a day, or too slow... 100 less.

This way you know exactly what works for YOUR body, not what some calculator thinks.

2-4 weeks in the scheme of things is nothing, if it allows for you to find the correct numbers.

Trigs has the right idea, no calculator can tell you spot on what your maintenance calories are. With that being said 1700 sounds very low and losing 8-10 lbs in a month is too fast. See how it goes though and adjust from there.

Not very great at this but I thought an average weight loss of 2 lbs/week is acceptable?

Myfitnesspals calculators suck. Calculators in general aren't that specific, but what they do is give you a great estimation of where you should be at allowing you to add or deduct calories accordingly.

    www.iifym.com has some great resources.

This. I also forgot to factor in what you were currently eating, and yes 1400 is very low, unless you're a smaller child. With that low of calories I couldn't imagine you are taking in a sufficient amount of each macronutrient for your energy and hormone regulations. Health comes before body image.

You want to increase your calories as much as you can while still losing weight. This way you are less likely to plummet into extremely unhealthy caloric deficits. You will also be able to sustain dieting a lot longer.

My fitness pal is a great app, 1400 calories a day is almost starvation macros and trust me in the long run can and will do some serious damage to your metabolism.

I defiantly recommend eating more like 2200 calories the optimal way to loose weight that will actually yield long term results is eating as much as possible whilst lifting heavy and training your ass off !

I'm on 318 day streak on My fitness pal feel free to add me 'Edayz' happy to help you out with anything ! I'm also eating 3200 calories a day whilst maintaining my body weight !

    Don't under eat !!

You gave pretty vague details as to your body composition/how much you workout/etc but regardless of what your doing I'd take Trigs advice on trying to find your own macros through trial and error as everyone is different if you wish to go this route but first I'm going to make two assumptions that I think are fair due to lack of information. The first being that you picked up a training program along with your diet plans and the second being you are beginner/novice. With all that being said -- I still think its best not to get wrapped up into the calories in > out science just yet, its tedious and unnecessary for beginners in my personal opinion. If you let your body be your guide and eat healthy nutritiously full foods with small snacks like an apple/banana in between meals to keep yourself satisfied and just focus on hitting the weights hard I can almost guarantee you'll see the results you want w/o counting macros and starving yourself especially being your a beginner that has potential to build a foundation of muscle whilst losing some fat at the same time. You can also consider throwing in cardio on off days if your ambitious enough for that extra oomph.

Just my two cents, take it or leave it. :)

Use MyFitnessPal for tracking macros absolutely. It's calorie calculator for goals isn't necessarily the best
