Does running laptop 24/7 ruin it?

Got a laptop I'm using for splashing for like 20 hrs a day. Obviously monitor light is turned off but its still being run a lot. Will this be bad for the computer? particularly the battery? (I keep it plugged in while I do this)

I don't know alot about comps lol

In general, they will wear out quicker than desktops, but it shouldn't be a problem. However, a laptop compared to a desktop is very compact, heat is building up, so keep it as cool as you can (you might have to clean the vents for that). You can remove the battery from your laptop while plugged. Having a constant charge on the battery will wear it out quicker.

    Good luck. :)

It will destroy the battery, but not much more. They can easily be replaced if it gets to a point where you literally need it plugged in to work.

Wear and tear will destroy the battery causing your Laptop too slow down which will overall make your computer a pile of sh*t.

To fix this, buy a new battery.

I love how nobody can actually answer questions accurately anymore... the only one that does is Avenue.

Your primary concern with your laptop (especially if you are running in a high-performance mode) will be heat. Heat can potentially destroy the components in a computer faster than the battery life should be. In laptops your time spent running programs consistently keeps heat on metal components in a close quarters space unless it is properly ventilated. You should highly consider a laptop cooler if you are going to run it consistently. This 1. Lifts the base off of a table to give proper ventilation to said base and 2. Pushes hot air away from the system (or cold air towards the system).

If you are concerned about battery life, there are two different methods to approach: 1. The method Avenue suggested (remove the battery if possible). or 2. Every couple of days unplug your laptop and drain the battery completely then plug it back in. This should -theoretically- assist in preserving the life of the battery.

Is that so? I used to run my Laptop constantly for at least 8 hours a day, 5-6 days a week (was permanently plugged in). It will take a VERY long time for what you said to happen.

Literally the only noticeable thing was that my battery life has significantly deteriorated overtime.

(This was over a 3+ year period, where you'll likely have bought a new one by then anyway)

If you are keeping it cooled well, then the system should be fine. The only thing that will wear is the battery. Unless you have something else affecting or system, all you will have to replace in the future is the battery and that isn't too expensive. Try keeping the charger plugged off if you're at 100% battery.

Factually, yes it does damage the computer unless it's adequately cooled. Especially on laptops that are running programs that require the CPU/GPU to be loaded.

Running your laptop to browse the internet or porn websites doesn't count. Running it for games/rendering/etc. (processing intensive programs) for 8 hours a day, 5-6 days a week you will burn out your laptop in a MUCH shorter time if not maintained properly.

Pull the battery out of the laptop and just keep it plugged in.

Keep monitor off if you don't need to see.

Add an extra cooling system under the laptop.

Does running laptop 24/7 ruin it?

SO much back-and-forth in this thread.
I'm not sure what splashing is, but it sounds like something that might involve your computer NOT sitting idle for 20 hours a day. So I will proceed under that assumption.

    Facts:
*cooler hardware is always happier hardware
*pushing up to around 80% of thermal junction max temperature is generally safe on mobile hardware. above that will not hurt your computer in any way, but extensive periods of time at those temps will cause silicon deterioration, eventually instability, and eventually death. This is a long drawn-out process that can sometimes take a year or more to accomplish though, unless you just have a poor chip. I've personally run a laptop at about 95% of its CPU's TJM temp (rated at 102*c for shutdown) for weeks on end nonstop 24/7 using throttlestop, and the laptop is still fine to this day.
*mobile chips are designed with the obvious fact in mind that they will be subjected to more heat than desktop chips, so there is no reason to freak out about the fact that your laptop runs 10-15*c higher than a desktop at idle, and may reach 80*c under load. Furthermore, unless you force clock speeds, pretty much every CPU will throttle it's clock speeds before it reaches TJM rated temperature in an effort to reduce temps while maintaining productivity. If this can't be done, it will shut down once the chip reaches a preset temperature for thermal shutdown. Most modern laptop chips will shut down at just overTJM temp(which is nowadays usually right around 100-105*C) so they don't get close to the point in which a silicon chip basically insta-fails.

You can get away with a lot on mobile hardware, but in any case if you're planning on running your computer for long periods of time(particularly under some sort of load) then you should do your best to manage its temps. Something simple like bottle caps under the rear of the laptop can make a difference on some cooling solutions. Laptop coolers that actively blow air can make a decent difference as well. These not only help lower CPU temps, but blow air across drives, RAM, and the motherboard...and this can be beneficial as well! Mosfets, VRM's, and many other things on the motherboard can get hot under extended loads.

you should do what you can to keep your fan and heatsink radiator clean. It's generally not recommended to blow into there and spin your fan up to high speeds with compressed air. Try short blasts to manage this. If possible, it is best to disassemble and clean that way, or if you have direct access to the fan, hold the fan from spinning while you blast it. If you spin the fan too fast, it can throw the fan out of balance...causing damage to the bearings/bushings and also to the fan impeller itself. chances of this aren't huge, but I've seen it happen and replaced a few peoples fans for what I suspect is this very reason.

as for the battery thing, as said before...remove it if possible. If not, at least drain it every few days and you'll be fine

Hopefully you learn something from this, and have a better understanding now. You can always ask if you want to know more. That's what help is for.

Kinda off-topic, but I believe OP means splashing in RuneScape (a method to train your Magic skill).

Does running laptop 24/7 ruin it?

Thanks for the help guys. I have a samsung 7 series so the battery is not easily removable, so I'm not sure if removing the battery is an option. Its just rs loaded up essentially, the CPU usage isn't too high (like 15%), but I do feel it being pretty warm on the bottom. The laptop is around 3 years old right now and I do notice the battery isn't great (it isn't horrible either). It lasts like 3 hours when I'm constantly using it.

I may try to prop it up with something for now to let it vent while I'm doing this.

Is there a cooling system you guys would recommend?

I used the X-slim for a long time. definitely not a bad notebook cooler since it's fairly portable and has decent airflow, but the actual static pressure output of it isn't spectacular for laptops with limited vents on the bottom of the laptop. The X-slim 2 is even better. The notepal X3 would be best for you if you plan to leave it running in one place for a long time. It's not very portable though.

Thanks. the x3 is like almost 40$ though, I guess I'll get the x-slim sometime. Is it expensive?

also: I don't get the blue screen so it looks like the heat isnt too bad for now

if it's a gaming laptop nothing will happen...don't worry about the battery being pluged in all the time..nowadays the battery will charge to 100% then the laptop stops charging it untill it detects it's about 90-95% ...

I'd only run my desktops 24/7 as they are simpler to maintain than laptops where parts can be difficult to acquire cheaply

I keep my laptop on almost all day and occasionally during the nights. I switch the power mode from high performance (only used during day) to battery power saver. I've done this with other laptops as well (Dell D620) and it still work til this day. Just make sure that your laptop isn't overheating or anything, I recommend a laptop cooler. Also, it does waste electricity keeping it idle
