Three students have caused a mathematical sensation. they have made the most magical square ever.
They have caused a worldwide sensation with their discovery, thus the mathematicians Arno van den Essen and Nico Landsman of the Radboud University in Nijmegen (holland).
The mathematical discovery comes in the name of Jesse Hoekstra (17) and Willem Schilte (17) of the Dominicus College in Nijmegen and Petra Alkema (15) of the gymnasium Bernhove in Heeswijk-Dinther.
A magical square is a mathematical range of number which added up are always equal horizontally, vertical, diagonal and even in a circle.
More than 250 years ago the British mathematical Benjamin Franklin constructed Franklin five magical squares.
To the solution of those squares was looked for ages, until Arno van Essen last year succeeded solve a part of the mysterie.

But the sqare of 12 by 12 remained still a mystery. The "ultimate challenge'', thus professor Landman.

The lastyear students took part to a masterclass of van den Ende
at the end of the year at the Nijmeegse Universiteit. By using his method they succeeded in December last year to solve the 12 X 12-square.
They have cooperated since then in the refinement of the key to the old riddle.

These three children are brilliant. "Because this isn't occasional'', says van den Essen. This is the most magical square in five thousand years.
The article in Science concerning Benjamin Franklin from 2001 is nothing in comparison with these guys. They are really geniouses. The are astouned by the fact they caused that much of attention. Jesse: We have invented the square when we were puzziling with a square by dividing it in smaller squares. We discovered later that we had a special square with weird things, such as reflected characters.

Hoekstra and Schilte used their discovery for their exams, which they presented Wednesday evening. Thereby they revealed that they have made in the meantime also a 16 X 16-square, of which was thought that it was impossible to make.

They also find more and more so far unknown correct numbers in their first square, like forming characters and figures. Landman and van den Essen will present the discovery internationally now. The square is named HSA-sqare (Hele Speciale Attractievierkant -> very special attraction square).
