I would just like to hear what the Sythe community thinks about the military. Rather that be, joining, how they serve, the military's political actions.
And what country you are in?

Myself, I'm in the US Air Force and I love it. If you have any questions feel free to ask

I'm against any kind of offensive military. I live in the US.

At best its a waste of money, at worst its murder or genocide.

Not trying to be offensive to you in particular, I know plenty of people that join because there are a lot of personal benefits of doing so.

Oh I agree a lot. I can't speak for all the military, but for me personally, we should definitely stop throwing ourselves into others country's problems. We are not the world police. We have a lot of problems in the states

While I respect the individuals who server in the military and think often what they do is valiant and selfless, I have to state that as an organisation and as a concept I find the Military to be immoral and unjust. I fail to align my support and thoughts with an organisation that's purpose is essentially to kill. I would however like to state that this is not a reflection on the individual servicemen and women, but the concept of an army. Take care!

And OP, I know there are quite a few other users who are in the military here! N4n0, a staff member is currently serving in Korea I believe? Might be corrected on that, but I think it's right!

    Take care.

I contemplated joining solely because of the benefits. In high school, military recruiters came by often and that's all they seemed to talk about.

I have mixed emotions and opinions about the military here in America. It seems to be most kids' Plan B out of high school. The military is said to be this great, patriotic, beneficial thing you can do instead if college isn't right for you right now. What's wrong with getting trained, disciplined, and some money while you standby to protect your country and its freedoms if need be? On the other hand, the military seems to be nothing more but a namesake of the government and the government is in the negative when it comes to good things I think. That's just me. The military is my Plan B too though. The military is always an option, I think that's why it's so appealing to many people (and so many adolescents).

I'm against the military but not the people IN the military that believe they are serving their countries honorably.

I just don't think most of the money in the world should go toward further dividing our race and killing each other over the pettiest things.

Lol wut. Explain what you meant by this.

I am ambivalent in my opinion of the military. On one hand I do see the benefits of joining, however I disagree with most everything they have been doing for the past few years...

Im not into the idea of us playing global police force when shit isnt even being taken care of stateside.

It's a choice that I don't believe makes any person better than any other person. You do not deserve discounts, you do not deserve recognition, you do not deserve special treatment, and you do not deserve any more respect than would be given to any other human being. To expect otherwise is disgusting.

Like any occupation, and depending which part of the military we are talking about, they require certain unique skills. The skills demanded in the military I think should be respected, the sheer toughness, strength, endurance, etc etc. So on the individual level, I generally respect those in the military that embody such traits worthy of respect.

The political side of it I cannot respect anywhere near as much however, but that lack of respect is not directed at those who follow orders (this is just the nature of their job), but those who give them in response to political pressure.

By dividing our race (the human race), I mean that the military is built on patriotism and a deep sense of it to boot. It doesn't emphasize that we are all one people, it says to protect <insert country here> above all else. National security takes priority over issues elsewhere.

It doesn't directly divide humanity but it subtly encourages inequality by having it built in that this country takes priority over other countries.

My dad served in the UK REME (Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers) for 22 (I think) years.
I had always dreamed of signing up at 16 but when I got to that age my parents talked me into doing an extra 2 years in education.
4 years later I'm still in education but going into film.
I still think about what it would be like and wish I had gone into it, but I'm thinking of joining the TA or perhaps the police force now.

How are you finding military life?

Me and my girlfriend are hoping to move to America in the next 5 or so years and I was thinking of maybe signing up then... Maybe even the Marines.

US Military have this stigma that I've found myself believing in. Too many fucked up interventions for them to be taken serious again
