LizardSquad hitting XBox/PS

LizardSquad is a self-proclaimed "hacker" group of what I believe to be a handful of 10-ish 20-odd year olds. Now, what they've done isn't hacking, I know, it's just a DDOS. But they've taken Xbox/Microsoft (approx. 43Million people affected) and Playstation/Sony (approx. 110Million people affected) down on Christmas day to prove a point that these companies don't spend enough on security and partly for shits and giggles. Bearing in mind, even Government websites have been taken down before by the Anonymous group - so is it even possible to be always on top of things? Microsoft managed to stop the attacks and Sony struggled for some time more - LizardSquad have claimed to have stopped hitting them now though.

Do you think LizardSquad have a good moral going here to show the company what's what? Or do you think LizardSquad are dumb morons who're keeping you from gaming for a heartbreaking 14 hours?

 

I don't think they have good moral nor do I think they're dumb morons. They're annoying the wrong people, though.

Sure, go to Sony and/or Microsoft, sit in an office with their head of security and laptop and show how easy it would be to get past their security and send the servers down - Hell, they might even get a lifelong job on the security team for showing such skill, but upsetting the 10 year old who's just got Xbox Live for the first time after the single mother worked 50 hours overtime on minimum wage to make ends meet isn't really anything to shout about or be proud of.

 

Idfk how this sht works but why cant they do something that fucks with companies and not the people theyre tryna help. They prob think there doing good and i dont play my ps3 so idm but like i feel like its almost only for fun for them and they realised if they say its to prove companies dont pay enough for security itll make em look like heroes or somesht.

 

Probably because quiet protest does nothing to big companies. They don't speak that language.

I mean, the group have hit RS and LoL before - so I think the moral good just seems to be a mask, there is no point to it.

 

This happened and ended on Christmas day when Kim Dotcom gave them premium memberships to his product so they would stop. They're now attacking Tor.

You should go on Reddit, you'd see these things come up as they happen.

 

They gave them vouchers and they didn't stop, they just took them.

Another group of immature "l33t haxx0rz" on a massive internet power trip. Basically a carbon copy of lulzsec, except lizardsquad hasn't proved anything besides that they can operate a botnet.

 

They're just attention whores with a big botnet. They clearly are't trying to accomplish some good cause and it doesn't prove anything about either companies "security." Its difficult to mitigate a massive scale ddos attack for anyone.

 

Tbh, Microsoft and Sony should be THANKING them. A group of 20 year olds able to hack into their network. They should have the security to prevent this stuff. If I were Microsoft or Sony, I'd pay this group of people to improve the security and fix any exploits

 

There are no exploits. Let me send a massive DDOS attack your way, and if you bitch about it, I'll say it was your fault for not properly securing your stuff. That's not how it happens, man. You can't plan for such a surge in traffic unless you want to spend a lot of money for no benefits other than occasionally fighting off an attack.

 

Na not true. Dotcom did give them the $99 premium vouches which would be turned into lifetime vouches providing they didn't attack again; furthermore, the vouchers would be cancelled if they did attack again.

The continued outage has been at the fault of Xbox/Playstation console owners. They have been overloading the servers with millions of people attempting to connect and then reconnect (rather than people signing in at different times/people getting off/etc.) Lizardsquad stated that they stopped the attack a while ago.

As for the actual thread discussion, the group is a sham. They had threatened Tor and stated they would be severely damaging Tor/it's servers/etc. All they did was DDoS the Tor Project website.

DDoSing is in no way hacking and any 12 year old with internet can find themselves a shell. I'm not sure what their goal was (if there was any) so I'm not going to speculate on the morality of it.

They didn't just ddos them, they were able to make some games for free via the PSN/XBL store. So no, they didn't just send a botnet at them or whatever, they actually did something. Unless I'm missing something?

OT: I think what LizardSquad have done is quite idiotic. To take off kid's games on christmas is very unfair.

 

There was a different interview, and at the end of it he was asked if he felt bad that 100s of millions had their Christmas ruined and he said, "Why would I feel bad, Christmas isn't about playing video games." I agree with him. He took down two networks for a day and everyone is getting flustered on a holiday that is about family.

 

Yeah, I found myself agreeing with them in that respect too.

Yeah, definitely feel you there. If I had planned on gaming on Christmas and it was down, I'd just go do something else (likely with my family or friends) instead of just sitting waiting for it to come back online:3
