[CnC] Forum Restructure

Ghastly, drop the attitude dude, chill out, we're all friends here ^_^

If you propose your idea then I'd know how many sections you think should be added and where. You're saying the best thing for expansion and growth is adding more sections which, over time, would lead to a lot more new sections.

You can get yourself in a mess pretty quick, lol. It would be easier if you could make all the changes then hit apply, rather than step by step.

 

Over the years I've gone back and forth on that issue a lot. Now I've basically come to the opinion that no matter which way you go you could harm or hurt activity. Let's say if you have one section (like General Discussion) on some forum (aka not Sythe... This is a thought experiment) that is very active. When and what subsections or new sections should you make? Well some topics will benefit from subsections and flourish and others will not and activity will drop off. If you break off the largest of the discussion points in this fake forum, into its own subsection you may have just killed a lot of the other smaller topics discussion because of less traffic going to that one major forum. If you break off a minor topic that gets a lot of threads but not many posts you may gain activity for that topic since the threads will be more visible, which will encourage more posts which may encourage more threads.

If we take General Discussion and the Technology section here on Sythe for an example. I suggested the technology section awhile ago since it seemed like something nerdy RS players would like. Since then it has been decently active and had more varied topics and threads than used to be posted in general discussion but it is not as active as it could be. It also may have contributed to the falling general discussion thread count by drawing away viewers from that section and to the other section. So it's hard to say if it has harmed or helped.

 

I'm debating. It shouldn't be looked at as callous behavior.. You guys should know that by now.

Ah, your gateway theory again. In what way does the addition of a new forum lead to more additions? If it's probable then yes, if it doesn't sound good, then no.

I don't think the forum should be restructured. I made it clear from the get go. Go over to the suggestion forum to view forum addition threads.

 

The point is that there's always room to change. Imagine when Sythe had its first liked forum design/organization compared to now. Things have obviously changed over time. What's the problem with changing and making it easier/better?

So why not a restructure and more sections when they're suggested? I think restructuring makes more sense because all the like-things are grouped.

 

What are some opinions on taking the Media section: http://www.sythe.org/media/ , and collapsing all of the subsections into one section? I know I frequently do not go into there because it requires additional clicks to get to the TV/Movies section and none of them are particularly active.

 

How many (main) forums do you regularly use on Sythe?

Why do you like the current structure? Why do you think it should go unchanged? Do you see growth while making no modifications? If so, where?

I still have not seen any solid reasoning for your stance. The majority of your posts include definitions. We know English. Please elaborate a bit more if possible.

I agree with that. Those sections have like 2-3 active threads and otherwise dead. Usually quick post count threads.

No I have them but have been so conditioned that I never use them.

 

If we just stopped all unnecessary changes we wouldn't have to change anything. The site meets it's goal. Richard gets the money he needs to be generated; the secondary objective now is to make the site better to use, friendlier to use, more community-fun oriented and so on.

Quick post count threads are fine by me and I actually like them since they encourage people to post.

 

When you looked at the last forum restructure, was there any indecisiveness when approving it? What has changed since then?

Same thing can be said to you. What you view as a improvement, can also be detrimental to the whole cause.

At this point you're using opinions to support your initial claim.

 

Overall, this is a step in the right direction for the site's growth. Looking forward to some proposed changes in the near future.
