Should inmates have to work?

Idk really drent, this is just the world we've lived on for this long and I wouldn't even see the need of doing that because I got used to this kind of shit world. Where we all die because of diseases and where you don't care about others. It would be good to let them work but that would be sooooo dumb because who knows what would happen with them and with the people they would work with.

 

In most prisons in the United States, they allow inmates the choice to work for low wages doing simple tasks repeatedly. I'm sure there's a system that keeps them all in check and minimizes danger in the work zone. However, forcing them to work without their will and for no pay will just cause outrage, riots, and lawsuits.

 

I think it should be a rule/law to make them work, so they can contribute to their society by working "to pay off" his/her debts. Although I don't mean that they should be forced to work, however I think it would bring alot of benefits to the prison or even the society were the prison is.

 

Yea inmates should totally work other wise they literally have no purpose in life other than using my tax money to get 3 meals a day along with a shitty bed. They might as well be dead. However strangely enough it would apparently cost more to kill a prisoner than to keep him in prison for life.

 

Yes, in russia they work and earn €5/day, thats pretty decent for being behind bars in my opinion, they can afford cigarettes and such

 

in denmark they get a computer a job getting 10$/hour, free food so all the polish criminals and other criminals see danish prisons as hotels lol..

 

In my opinion the prison sistem should be reformed all around the world to be self self sustained.
Working to be mandatory. To earn your place there. For some of the prisoners life in prison is a luxury. Not saying that they should work 20h a day, but 40h a week like some people work isn't unhumane.
With the money that they bring in, the prison administration can pay for the employees and the utilities.
With a good adiministration a prison not only can provide money to sustain themselfes but can make profit as well.

 

I agree, prison systems are a big economic burden on the government. Self sustaining prisons, or even profitable ones let prisons expand, and could then help the over crowdedness. Although having jobs would allow prisoners to have potential alternatives when they get out, this is America and freedom of choice is a big deal. Some inmates want to work on their defense, especially if they truly are innocent.

 

The word self-sustaining would most certainly turn into the word profitable ( if that's not already the case )..

And I shouldn't really need to explain why that would be a bad thing.

 

Federal Prison Industries, better known as UNICOR, consists entirely of convicts working at 89 factories. Together, they help clothe the United States military, making jackets, uniforms, helmets, shoes, and even flak vests. For police officers, they craft body armor and holsters.

 

I see 2 problems with this and maybe this has already been brought up, I haven't read the 70+ replies:

1. You now have an incentive to throw people into an already overcrowded prison system (cheap/free labor for private companies at taxpayer expense)
2. You have now added an additional punishment onto what the law already saw fit to give the prisoner

 

I believe they should have to work for a meal. Look at homeless people that don't work, out there starving. Meanwhile child molesters, rapists, murderers, all get to eat for free.

 

Gonna have to agree with you here. They should be payed, they shouldn't be payed even minimum wage. But they should be payed.

I'd also say that they should do something that could potentially be building, not only to themselves but to other things. Such as planting trees etc. (more of an excursion sort of thing, every once in a while)

Giving them wages wouldn't make it so people would want to throw everyone in jail for cheap labor. But it'd not only help them out once they get out of jail, but do society a favor.

This is an astute thought. When the US banned slavery they specifically excluded slavery as a punishment for a crime. Forcing prisoners to work is slavery and I don't think anyone can morally defend that.

 

Definitely, there are actually some prisons in countries that do. It's a complete waste of resources and human life to leave people in prison doing nothing every day when they could be doing useful things such as learning, working and helping the community.

 

The inmates don't make money. When they go to a work release camp they can work in the community but pay a percentage of their check to the department of corrections.

If they are not in work release, which is a low risk camp, they are required by DoC to work for the prison, jobs such as laundry/cleaning/kitchen.

This saves the prison money, as the only employees they must hire are officers and classification.

 

Yea make them do community service or something. Especially life term inmates might as well do something to counter act the amount of money wasted taking care of them

 

Let them out to do community service, with regulations and guards around, of course. This would at least be a win win situation in getting back money for the government.

 

Some of them steal from hardworking people. They should have the feeling of working hard and not being rewarded. Inmates should be put to work for all types of things
