Runescape Experiences -> Internship/Job

I'm interested in how your resume looks when you add it. Suf using his position on Sythe is one thing. But how does one make real world trading, by breaking game rules, sound positive. I mean I find it hard that they'd take what happens on a game seriously.

 

It seems to me that flipping gold is about as exciting as flipping antiques.. And I'm sure they'll think the same, but at least flipping antiques doesn't break any terms of service or involve any sort of black market (maybe..).

You'd be better off gaining actual experience, building a portfolio and having projects at hand to show. If I was hiring developers I'd want to see projects that they've spent many of hours figuring out and the good ones would shine above the rest. However, someone coming in and talking about flipping gold or doing torso services would invoke a quick GTFO.

 

Just talk about selling virtual items. You don't need to mention you are breaking the rules or anything. Talk about it in economic and business terms. Do not talk about it in Sythe terms.

 

Exactly. The goal is to put it in real life terms rather than RuneScape and Sythe terms.

Anyways, for those of you who think that recruiters will look down on you for participating in RWT, you should consider the fact that Goldman Sachs invested in IGE (one of the largest and most famous real world trade companies in all of history).

Hope this doesn't count as a gravedig since I'm just providing an update on this project!

It's midway through internship recruiting season now, and I've received at least a 50% first round offer rate using my HEAVILY gaming based resume. (I say at least because I am still waiting to hear back from some places, and the % will go up if they extend first round offers.)

I'd say this is a pretty good indicator that one can definitely use a gaming background (particularly in real world trade) to score internships. I will let you guys know how the rest of the process goes. If things continue to go well, then I will definitely initiate this project and begin offering services that will help people here land some great internships in finance.

For those interested, I have been applying to boutiques and regionals for positions in Sales & Trading as well as Investment Management. Bulge bracket deadlines are still in the future, so I have no data on them yet. I will let you guys know stats on the rest of the process later.

Overall, I want to emphasize that it does seem like you can turn your RuneScape (or other game) experiences into a great job/internship. So far it has been working out pretty well for me.

Hate to say I was wrong but in this case I definitely was, I talked about it with two different employers and both seemed extremely interested in my work here. I however took the job I didn't talk about sythe with but for reference the employers I talked to about it were one of the big 6 Canadian banks and a corporate management position within the industrial sector both which were surprised to learn about my experience here. I think it's all about how you spin it, I'm not sure if it would have made a difference in the interview where I accepted the job but I'm sure it wouldn't have hurt. I'm somewhat happy I didn't bring it up in this position though because explaining my activity in a blackmarket would be hard and I'm sure most of my coworkers could figure out what this site is since they're fairly tech savy.
