    Are MLB Players overpaid?

In my mind, I think they make WAY too much money.

The industry for Baseball in America is huge, I don't understand how they can get so much money to the players though.

For example, I heard Giancarlo Stanton is talking with the Marlins about a $300 MILLION DOLLAR DEAL!

    What are your thoughts? Discuss.

    Are MLB Players overpaid?

Way overpaid. It's almost hilarious how overpaid they are when you actually look at their minimal production. Giancarlo Stanton isn't even worth 150 million. It's hilarious the guy wants 300m, and will probably get close to it too, I wouldn't doubt it...there are a lot of dumb teams with tons of money.

I remember Robinson Cano also wanted 300M, don't remember how much he ended up getting.

While I think pretty much all athletes are insanely overpaid, I definitely think baseball is the absolute worst. There's a handful of teams that don't even have a 300m payroll. So it makes smaller teams bringing guys up through the farm system a doomed effort from the start, because they won't have the money to re-sign them later on. The cash cows like the Yankees, Red Sox, Angels, etc will be the ones monopolizing incredibly overhyped and overpaid players.

It is absolutely ridiculous. Look at how much the Yankees spent for AVERAGE players such as Beltran and Ellsbury. It's honestly hilarious how much money these big time clubs blow, just because they have it.

But here's where the good news is. Because they pay so much for these overhyped and overpaid players, the teams that STICK TOGETHER usually end up being the best teams. Look at the Royals success, they have next to no money. The Athletics have been able to play with the big boys as well, also having no money. And then you have the Tampa Bay Rays, who until recently also had been highly successful with minimal money (until they lost pretty much all their players not being able to afford to re-sign them).

Well, if the teams can afford to pay it, then why not? Teams have sponsors, companies pay big money to play ads during games etc. Ticket sales and payments for watching matches on tv definitely generates enough revenue to afford the deals.

Obviously not. They generate that amount of wealth or more from sales and they get paid for it. They make a lot of money, but "overpaid" suggests they're making more than they're worth, which clearly isn't the case or they wouldn't be paid that much.

They definitely make more than they're worth about 90 percent of the time. Why? Because teams like the Yankees and Red Sox who spend money made OUTSIDE of baseball pay heaps for average players. The Yankees spent more money singing players than they earned for an entire season, and the players are considered by many to be just average to slightly above average players in Carlos Beltran (who is also aging) and Jacoby Ellsbury.

Meanwhile Victor Martinez makes a fraction of the money but is twice the player as the above mentioned players. Basically you can blindly pick any player on the Yankees, Red Sox, Angels, Phillies, etc. and every single player will be making well more money than they are actually worth --- relative to stats, big time game scenarios, clutch hits, etc.

The reason players are starting to demand exorbitant amounts of money aren't because they deserve it, it's because they know that a team where money is no object will overpay them.

tl;dr: They're definitely overpaid. They do NOT generate the income to justify the amount of money they get - Like I said, the Yankees spent more on two signings last year than they made through business - which is ridiculous when you consider the MLB's ridiculously long season, and the Yankees being one of the most iconic teams in the league if not the most iconic.

    Most overpaid baseball players-
    Tim Lincecum
    Alex Rodriguez
    Robinson Cano
    Albert Pujols
    Ryan Howard
    Joe Mauer
    Carl Crawford

    Future overpaid baseball players-
    Giancarlo Stanton
    Mike Trout

Ryan Howard gets paid 25 million a year to hit 23 homers. So if a homer is worth more than a million a piece, then yeah I guess he's not overpaid.

Joe Mauer made 20 million this year to hit 4 homeruns and 55 rbis. Lmao.

I don't see how anyone can say they're NOT overpaid. It's simply not true when Alex Rodriguez's contract is more than almost a dozen teams ENTIRE payroll.

I'm shocked at how they can be paid so much. Although baseball is popular I honestly think Football and even soccer is more popular.

Yet $100,000 a year in soccer is considered pretty good in America.

    Are MLB Players overpaid?

The easy answer is yes, but the thing you have to realize is that they play a 162 game season, not including playoffs. They sell seats and sell very nice tv contracts, which in turn, creates higher salaries for players.

However it's already been established that in earnings reports the Yankees + Red Sox spend more on players than their yearly annual income. And that's income TOTAL.

Yeah, I agree they get paid too much, the team owners should really be making more money and it would help them out a lot if they didn't have to pay the players so much.

That's an invalid argument, when you are that good at something, and your whole life revolves around it, you deserve that pay..

    Are MLB Players overpaid?

    Uh .. no.

If that were the case, the actual important jobs would be getting that kind of money. Sports aren't important, it's just a cash cow.

Anyway, Giancarlo Stanton just got a 325M contract. Baseball players are obviously overpaid, because that contract is a joke.

Disgustingly overpaid. I'll raise my son to hit a ball with a stick really well so he can rake in hundreds of millions of dollars.
