Feel like Im really screwing up in school

You need to get focused and realize that this is reality now. You fail this stuff, you won't be getting a job in the future that's worth your while.

Get your ass in gear and realize that it's time to start caring and get rid of those negatives in your life. Surround yourself with others that have good goals and are on the right track. You can speak with an advisor as well to help you out.

It all comes within. You must motivate yourself.

 

Just realize: There is a time and a place for everything. While smoking and drinking are the best habits, there are places to do that. There are also places to do homework and studying. Homework and studying should take precedence, and it's a mind battle. You need to improve your attitude about doing it; once you do, then you'll be able to do more of it and easier.

 

I just don't have that motivation other people do. I can't sit there and study for 3 hours straight, or stay up all night doing homework. I'll get distracted and can't focus, and I won't retain the information. I pay attention (for the most part) in class but it's those times I need to study for a huge exam (Ie; I have a Psych exam tomorrow that's like 20+ types notes of information I need to know ) and i'm stressing over it. I've studied maybe an hour a day the past 3 days, but I know that's not enough. Idk. The only times i've been able to sit for extended periods of times is during finals / midterms when I took adderall.

 

I'm not the best person to give advice on stuff like this as I didn't do well in school.

First off; Find a hobby - If you feel like you are drinking and smoking too much then stop before it's too late. The best way to do that is find something you enjoy and do that to get your mind off those bad habits.

Secondly; School isn't for everyone - I hated school, didn't do work, messed around with friends and hardly went the last few years. After school I went to college and hated that too. I didn't turn up and ended up leaving. If you aren't enjoying school just wait it out and get a job after. I left college at 16 (I live in the UK.) After college I got work experience at a food place in England called Greggs. I got a job out of it and now I'm a Senior Sales for the company, I'm 18 now.

Moral of the story, don't worry too much about school, but don't get into bad habits.

 

College I feel like is a necessity for me. I have two older sisters who dropped out of school (1 is doing fine for herself out in Cali, the other is living at home working minimum wage). My parents are adamant about me going to school and getting a good job, and I don't want to disappoint them. Not only that, my dad worked 2 jobs, had a kid at 19, and graduated college so if I can't even graduate college.. what does that say about me?

 

That you are your own person and don't give a fuck what people think. You're living your life not them.

I have always thought of this saying as true though, "The harder you work when you're younger, the less you have to work when you're older."

 

I don't want to be a disappoint to my parents, and they've already dished out over $75k in the past year and a half for my schooling. If I were to drop out that would be like a big slap in the face to them in my eyes. If I were to even tell them I was thinking about it I feel like they'd flip.

 

When parents pressure you to do something, it might not be in your best interest but it's almost always for your own good. School doesn't last for too long, and it's not that hard to see it through. You need to get yourself together and stop being the waster you're becoming by snoking and drinking and skipping class. Nobody else can get your ass in gear for you - only you can.

No advice you get here will magically make you concentrate on your studies - you have to do it for yourself. It'll be worth looking back and not regretting your former years when you're successful and therefore have a good career and an easy retirement.

 

Try to eliminate all distractions if possible, its a lot easier to zone in on things that way I personally find it's a lot easier to focus if I'm interested in something so maybe you could try approaching your work with a different attitude. If you're still having trouble after all this maybe its worth talking to your doctor and explaining the situation to him/her.

 

You either like something or don't. If you feel like you could gain more from leaving then do it. If not then stick to it while looking for other opportunities.

 

I like to use this little line from Star Wars in regards to your situation -

"Do, or do not. There is no try."

So what's it going to be?

 

just forget all problems and try focus on reaching a goal like finishing college
