i7 model what? There's hundreds of different types, and some of them are actually worse than some i5 models.

Unless you're doing heavy video editing or rendering don't get an i7. There's no point. The z97 is great, I had the z77.

I spend a bit extra on an i7 in 2010 and it's still going strong today. That could be a reason.

There is absolutely -no- advantage of an i7 over an i5 unless you are working with programs that utilize hyperthreading. Again, -no- advantage in speed, integrated graphics, clock (see below), color or smell... unless you are working with 3D rendering or video editing. If you are working with these programs then you should defiantly go with an i7.

Generally on a stock level, though, i7's have a faster clock (3.8 vs 3.9) and larger on board memory (6mb vs 8mb) which makes them faster with repetitive tasks (we're talking fractions of seconds and performance ratings only a few percent higher), but both i7's and i5's have turboboost which can basically make an i5 @4.0 run faster than an i7 stock @3.9... But do you want to pay 100-150$ more for a 2mb cache increase and 0.1 ghz faster stock clock? If you say yes then you have too much money or you're stubborn.

So again, if you need to utilize hyperthreading, go with i7. If not, don't burn your money.
