What are you thoughts on ADHD medication?

For most of you college/university students out there, especially US students, I'm sure you're aware of the prevalence of ADHD stimulants.

I personally believe that they are extremely beneficial if used for their intended therapeutic approach, as opposed to mixing them or using them to get high. Obviously there's no such thing as a free lunch, so naturally I suspect there would be some long term repercussions but I believe the increased quality of life is worth it.

I'm not suggesting that anyone try these medications if you aren't diagnosed with ADHD. Albeit, the diagnosis process is very flawed and any persistent person could get a diagnosis and subsequently a prescription.

I'm curious to hear your opinions on the topical epidemic, and perhaps some personal experiences?

 

I think it's bullshit. All psychotropic drugs are false advertised and wrongly misused.

I don't have ADHD but I could easily walk into a physician's office and get prescribed them by just saying a few symptoms. They hand them out like grocery bags at a grocery store. It's quite alarming honestly.

MD's just hand out a drug instead of putting them through therapy like they should go through first. Their fall back mechanism are prescription drugs.

Most the time young boys are falsely proclaimed ADHD just because they're more hyperactive compared to others. Being fidgety and blurting out answers classifies someone as ADHD in our society. This is humanly wrong.

You'd be quite surprised about the pharmaceutical company and their lies they've put out. Wrote a paper on it (main drug was Prozac).

 

ADHD the disease is an example of the medicalization of deviance, and it has also become an excuse to put your kids on ADHD drugs that turn them into little zombies.

As for recreational use I've considered it myself. I'd like to try them and see what they can do for concentration and thought.

 

While I think ADHD is over diagnosed, some people do have it, and it's hard to make an opinion if your brain functions normally. Also, in most countries it's heavily regulated, you have to see 2 psychiatrist, and often go through other therapy before medication is an often, e.g. Australia.

I agree with the pharmaceutical comments, there's much speculation that doctors/psychs receive a cut if they promote certain drugs. My local GP gave me depression meds when I went to see him on a completely unrelated issue, I'm not depressed in the slightest.

Some kids are way too young to be on it, most of their problems will dwindle away as they grow up. They should only be medicated after trying exercise, diet, sleep and natural supplements. It needs to be a last resort.

 

Yes some kids have ADHD, but rather than running to the drug, lets do some tests/therapy for awhile and see what it's like back at the kids home. Some kids aren't disciplined so they're just all over the place.

 

I've been on Ritalin for years, it helps me think but it has its' downsides too.

 

are yall sure it's good for studying? the only person i knew who used that shit to try to study in undergrad said it made her just zombie out and not do fuck all. said she studied the best while she was on cocaine. i believe she graduated with a 3.8 gpa and was some bio major or some shit

 

don't think ADHD is a real thing, its just a bunch of kids who never got their ass wooped as a child, and think they can do w/e they want.

 

I've never met a single person that has ADHD, and from where i'm sat it looks like a common thing centralized over in the US.

What are the downsides you experience, side effects, zombie feeling?

Effectiveness is dependant on an individual's genetic make up, which is why it varies for everyone.

Usual effect is I just cannot sleep or have great difficulty getting to sleep, my thoughts still race because I'm thinking about so much stuff, but physically I am quite relaxed.

If not on meds, I'm physically jumpy but quite "eugh, work" in my mind.

I've found I don't need meds as much if I'm working (as in employment), if it's educational environment then I'm more likely going to take them.

I do not think anybody should be allowed to take any mind altering substances until they are old enough to understand the effects and that their mental state may be affected permanently (in the case of pharmaceuticals). The shit changes the way you think, period. Whether or not that is a good or bad thing is up to the individual to decide.

Forcing this barely-tested chemical bullshit upon children should be illegal.

 

Haha, I'm going to have to side with Delta on this one. I have plenty of friends that have "ADHD" and are absolutely brilliant when they put their mind on a task they enjoy doing. When they're on their meds it's like they are just going through the motions of day to day life, not really enjoying things, I can't joke around with them since they don't really fire back at me like they normally would.

 

I don't know what this is, could you please explain me it? I was born in Russia so even if I lived in Ohio 1 year I didn't hear anything about this .

I've heard of a lot of people that take it before tests and such since it increases their awareness and such. Never tried it out myself but it sounds interesting.
