some, not hard to pass a x-ray, just depends on how lazy you get when it comes to removing slag, and how you lay your weld down. most people fail a xray because they made to deep a vally on the toes.

The most common defects I see are gas pores / porosity. Slag I don't see too often as most welds I see are mig or tig.

So have you had your welds pass?

i have, its very hard to get porosity in your stick weld, and if you are, you aint doing something right.

I personally haven't welded except for a 9th grade class I took where I built a plane. As for stitch welding it's commonly used when you need to remove a corroded (heavily rusted) piece of metal and weld in a new piece since it requires less grinding to render it flush with the rest of the original metal.

    Example :

Entrr im 99% certain you mean stick welding. Because that is a stick weld, essentially tacked on there... not sure if that weld was intentionally done that way or because the welder couldnt run a bead. I see how the gaps between the small beads could look like a "stich" but in reality a solid bead all the way across is far stronger. Im leaning towards fuck up considering most of the weld on the left side is half ass continuous.

I am an amatuer and do better looking work than the picture you provided. Do they run bondo (body filler) over those godawful welds or what?

for most welding done on cars, it would be done with tig and mig, only like welding on like maybe the frame or chassis would be done with stick.

alot of exhaust and headers are done with tig, and sometimes mig

thats what you'd call a intermediate weld or a staggered weld - if welding on two sides-

    You have a set length/pitch

length being the length of the weld, the pitch being the center to center distance between the welds

if the below rough painting makes any sense. all it really is, is a series of short welds. done to save money, time, and prevent warping.

is an example i guess, although i would call that more like tack weld then anything else.
