    Thoughts on tipping?

If you don't agree with the tipping system, the most fair approach would be:

Upon the entry of a restaurant when you are greeted by your waitress/waiter immediately tell them that you aren't going to give them any gratitude in the form of a tip. Watch the decrease in quality of service before your eyes. I think the purpose of the tip is to leave room for a personally measurable amount of money in relationship to the initiative and effort that was provided by the server. If you aren't satisfied at all, don't leave a tip, but if the service was mediocre - you should.

A friend and I tried this, and the service was still phenomenal, we ended up tipping immensely because it proved our theory wrong (and was hilarious). But I honestly feel that what happened with us was a very special case :p

When I used to go to university downtown, 20% tips were automatically applied to every single bill. It was quite bullshit but the service was always amazing.

Well, besides the unnecessary excessive use of commas, saying that they should have done well in school shows your ignorance. Waiters/Waitress' are jobs usually taken by college students, or those who can't find jobs anywhere else. Everyone knows it's one of the worst jobs out there because the income is different each week. I'm not seeing how this job reflects your education and how it is their fault for taking that job.

Why don't you understand that it is not the costumer's fault that they are paid 2.25$ an hour therefore it's not the costumer's responsability to tip them?

The most fair approach would be for me to not leave a tip if I don't think the server deserves it. I would only tip if the server is willing to go out of his/her way to make the service excellent, even when he/she isn't sure whether they'll get a tip or not. Of course, if a server knows he is going to get a tip, usually they'll offer better service and vice-versa. Servers should offer their best service all the time, not only when they know they're getting tipped.

Also, why "should" I tip if the service is mediocre? I don't see a reason that I should tip when the service is just mediocre and not outstanding.

It's not my fault that waiters/waitresses make minimum wage an hour with tips, yes its unfortunate but its not my problem. there are more less fortunate workers out there than waiters/waitresses.

I think you should tip, because if you were a waiter or waitress you know what it's like to be in their shoes.

I waited tables during the summer. Got paid a disgustingly low salary of about $6 an hour including tips. These ended up being where most of the income came. Not everyone tips, and it usually depends on the quality of the service provided. It should not be expected but used as an incentive for better service.
With this being said, I have to admit I rarely tip more than 10% of the bill.

Because in actuality servers are getting paid lower than mediocre to compensate for added wages in the form of tips. Obviously it's not our obligation to provide them wages, but if the service is "good"+ then why not? If tipping wasn't an option prices would be reflected by an increase so that all employees could get paid more "fairly".

I can't stand the idea of tipping in the USA. It doesn't lead to better service in my opinion because I've some shit service and I still tipped ten percent because I know they make next to nothing. Usually, I tip between 15 and 20 percent. The obligation to tip really bothers me because I just wish the restaurant wouldn't be so cheap and pay the restaurant people what they deserve to make. /end rant

I'm from Australia its not normal to tip but having visited the US before for an extended period of time the service tends to be a bit better. Drinks are also usually a bit cheaper.

I had a very similar experience in Japan (I lived there for a year), where tipping is also unusual. I don't think it's so much to do with tipping as it is to do with culture.

The fact that tipping is expected in the US means that a waiter or waitress can effectively give mediocre service and still expect some sort of payment for it. What this means is that people who hate their job are still getting similar treatment to people who love it, although it's the latter group who are more likely to give you good service.

Because, the business accounts for them to be tipped so the wage is set at that price.

And the reason why they're paid so little is because people are EXPECTED to give tips, which in any sensible part of the world are entirely OPTIONAL. Vicious circle, isn't it?

Fuck tipping them. Sorry to be rude, but if you're expecting a tip for something that you should do anyways, then you need to find a better paying job. I tip IF i feel its worthy.

For those servers who get mad when they don't get one, then you should look at another job.. Maybe fast food, where at least you haven't got to worry about your income, you know what it's GOING to be.

LOL, like I tip because you refilled my water and smiled. You better do some magic shit if you want 15% from me. Even if the meal is 80$, you gotta remember I'm paying for the food, the table, the drinks. I'm not paying that 80$ because you gave it to me.

I will only tip the driver at all times, and that's because he drove his poor ass to my house in his POS car, to give me food that my lazy ass wouldn't make or go get myself. Here's 4 dollars for you, now let me shut the door lol.

I personally always pay tips no matter what. In Canada, our minimum wage for those who can receive tips is $8 something. I tip more if the service was good but even then, when it's average, I tend to tip a lot as the few dollars more will not only make them happier but it'll make me happier in return. Doing good and making others happy is rewarding in itself, I enjoy it and it's more than worth it.

I've never worked such job that receive tipping but I'm sure, I wouldn't like it if people didn't tip me so I tend to do to others what I'd like them to do to me if it doesn't me all that much. I guess those who do not tip need to work one of those jobs to see what it must feel like. (and no, don't say they can go look for a job elsewhere because truth is, finding a job is not that easy especially given the unemployment issue.)
