Based on my own experience using 7 and 8, I strongly recommend using window's 7 unless you have some sort of tablet/PC combo unit. That is really the only time I find windows 8 usable.

Everyone that is bitching about windows 8 hasn't actually tried to fix the problem. Instead, they'd rather hate on it because they're too incompetent to google about the fixes that people have worked hard to create for people who hate the W8 metro. I've said this once already.... Install CLASSIC SHELL on your W8 computer, and enjoy a much faster version of windows 7. Then, you won't have any reason to whine about your W8 software cuz all the stuff you don't like about it is fixed by classic shell.

Get Windows 8 and then buy Start8. It will give you more functionality for the desktop.

I exclusively use Windows 8 on my Windows PC (my other is Kubuntu 14.04).

I think a lot of the hate towards it is kind of unjustified; it's based on a resistance to changing the "traditional" look-and-feel of the Windows graphical interface.

    - I have never had any compatibility issues with it
    - I have found that it is actually better performance than Windows 7
    - At first I disliked it, but now I am rather fond of the new start menu interface; it's far better for organising your stuff.
    - The metro interface doesn't have to be used at all, but if you get used to it there are tonnes of useful apps that you can run in split-screen tandem with your main desktop.
    - A lot of the original hate towards Windows 8 has been made null by the release of Windows 8.1 and subsequent updates.

    ---

In other words, use Windows 8.

As far as I know if you want skins you can just use Stardock products like in other versions of Windows. Alternatively you could try installing a different shell, such as LiteStep, but they can be fiddly to work with.

Windows 8 is fine but it needs some UI tweaking and easy access to some Metro Apps from desktop and yea it seems like Microsoft is working on it at least for next Windows version reportedly named Threshold, and I think Windows 8 will become another Windows Vista, replacing it with Windows 9 , So am sticking to Windows 7

If you don't mind the UI? 8.

If you absolutely can't stand it, no problem with 7.
