    Thoughts on tipping?

sometimes you have to realize that your tips are possibly feeding their families. They live off of you. many places pay 2.13/HR up to around 5/hr for tip-receiving employees....so you gotta factor that in. If you don't tip them, then basically their time with you was free.
If I get genuinely awful service, then chances are theyre not getting a tip, sure. But if it's halfass service, they'll get a tip. Good service, even more. Great service? I have no problem going over 20% in that case.
Moral is, don't neglect to give a tip just because you're a stingy bastard. if you can afford the meal, then what's a few extra dollars to help a stranger? It's only money, after all. Imagine how you'd feel in their shoes.

    What country are you in?

If you're anywhere in North America then yes, you're cheap as fuck and servers hate you. They're paid below minimum wage because you're supposed to tip to bring it up to a reasonable wage if the service was good. I'm not saying I agree with it, but that's how it is here. I've heard of servers making $2 an hour, and then relying on tips for the rest.

Basically if you can't afford to tip, you shouldn't be going out to eat.

I personally wouldn't want people giving me money out of pity. Money adds up and its not just about the money, its the principle. It makes no sense that society tells us that we are morally obligated to give money to waiters/waitresses, when we ignore the busboys that work for even less behind the kitchen.

Lets say that everyone stops tipping. If everyone stops tipping than waiters/waitresses will demand payment from their managers what they usually received in tips. Tips are just a stupid moral obligation that make no sense that society created.

I despise that it's come to the point where it's acceptable for employers to pay such low wages to servers.

I despise that it's now expected of me to make up the rest of their wages.

It's a bit of cognitive dissonance. I despise the practice but I always tip generously. I hope for a future where labor laws aren't so fucked, servers don't make slave wages, and I don't have to be expected to fork over an extra 20% on every other drink or every dinner no matter how mediocre the server.

if you can't afford to pay your employees you shouldn't be hiring/in business.

Their pay is not the customer's responsibility. If you seriously want to make someone's day, volunteer your time somewhere, or use that same money to buy the less fortunate a meal or two.

    Thoughts on tipping?

I know the servers will hate me, and that's why I'm against tipping. It's come to the point where tipping has become expected, and it should not be this way. A tip is supposed to be given if the customer feels like the server deserves it, and not any other reason. How does it make me cheap? You're throwing out accusations without even considering my point of view. I don't care if I'm in America or not, if I don't believe the server deserves a tip, I won't leave a tip. Also, I'm not "supposed" to help the servers earn enough money. Do I agree to leave a tip when I go into a restaurant? No. I'm pretty sure tipping isn't mandatory.

Your whole argument is based around tipping being mandatory, which is completely untrue. Tipping has never been mandatory, and for many reasons already stated, I feel that tipping shouldn't be expected. I know the tipping system in America is like that, but that doesn't mean I have to follow it. Just because tipping is expected in America (which I believe it shouldn't), it doesn't mean that I can't go out to eat. What is so special about a server's job that entitles them some of my money? Is it because they earn very little? Why don't I just give the money to the homeless then? They earn less, and they probably need it more.

Of course tipping isn't mandatory. I can understand that you would only tip if the server deserves a tip and I think that's perfectly reasonable.

This being said, servers are given very little because they do get tips. We, as the customers, end up supplying most of their income. Thus most people try to be a little bit more lenient in tipping, meaning that even if the server did an average job or slightly subpar, they'll tip.

Hypothetically speaking if nobody tipped then the servers would no longer be tipped employees so their wages would follow the regulations of standard employees. This means that the food prices would have to go up to compensate. Take that into consideration.

Who guarantees me that that same server isn't in a better financial situation than I am? How the hell do you know that the extra money given will make a lot less of a difference to me than to the server?

I don't really understand the logic behind "you're paying 40$ for something that you should be paying 50$ for". Why should I be paying that extra 10$? How can you accurately measure that the service is worth 10$ more? For all I know the food I'm eating could be frozen shit that the restaurant paid 5$ for and I'm paying 40$ for. And then I still have to give an extra on top of overpaying for my food?

I'm not even gonna comment on your comparison between not tipping and shoplifting, at the very least it is laughable.

It's a hard fucking job to work with the public and a lot of you are the reason it is a hard job. I especially hate Sundays because church people never tip. I tip pretty much every time I eat out and the service was good and it is usually shared between the table so most people usually end up with at least $10 or so.

If you go out and eat with more than 8 people or so then you're basically boned because they include a gratuity automatically. If there is an included gratuity I usually don't tip because it is something like 18% or so already.

Taking a restraunt as an example, I'd only tip if the service has been great. If I get some moody part timer who gets my shit wrong they're not gettin a tip from me.

I live on minimum wage and so do they. Minimum in the UK only varies between ages. At 21 the minimum is £6.31 an hour.

I completely support tipping in exspensive restaurants because sometimes you can get that bad waiter getting wrong orderes etc. tipping them allows them to know they were successful in their job assistancing you.

The min wage for a server in the United States is $2.25 I believe. So you are telling me 2.25/hr without tips is something that is possible to survive off of? No way.

If tipping wasn't expected of the customers I daresay they would be getting much, much more. Regardless of how much they're being paid, it doesn't mean you have to agree with or abide by the system.
