How come you deserve tips while other services don't? I mean you don't tip people at Mcdonalds, why not? They serve you food too. Society has ridiculous expectations for tipping which makes no sense at all.

I'm pretty sure the unemployment rate in the US is around 12%, which isn't insane but quite a lot. How come we need to pay extra just for people to do their regular jobs? I'm sure there are many people out there without jobs who are waiting to fill them in.

Nowadays when you go to restaurants, you're expected to tip. Not tipping at all is sort of in a way 'disrespectful', as in their line of work, tips are important to their income. Even if they do a horrible job, I think you should still tip them. Obviously make sure the tip reflects their service.

I'm a generous tipper, if I'm in a restaurant, I'm usually good for a 15 percent tip as long as the refills are frequent and the service is pleasant, which it usually is.

If I'm ordering food for delivery, I am an even more generous tipper. I will often tip 20 percent, and I once even tipped 50% on a meal that was delivered to me in a brutal snowstorm (all the areas around me were closed and I would have starved without that food), I was really appreciative of that person going through the elements just for me, and I rewarded them for it.

I don't think it's a culture thing for me that has me being a good tipper, I think I picked it up from my Pops.

Which is why I wouldn't give them the money directly. There are better ways of going about things.

I find it disrespectful for someone to expect me to give them money to do something they signed up to do in the first place. If I ever go to the US and a waiter or waitress expects a tip from me, honestly, I'd probably never go to the establishment again.

Tips only make up for what the employer doesn't pay them, so if they're not even getting minimum wage then their employer is to blame and that's not my problem.

You would never go to an establishment ever again because a waiter/waitress expected a tip to supplement their $2 wage?

Also, $2 is the minimum wage for some servers. It is reasonable for the employers to give them this much because of the tips they expect the servers to get.

I actually have the same mind set as Swan. Even though tips are only a few bucks, I really don't think it is fair to just give someone extra money for satisfactory work/behavior. Of course though, if the waiter/waitress goes out of the ordinary to make sure my experience with the service is great, then i would go the extra mile and tip them. But it honestly makes no sense to give someone extra money for no reason.

If we support satisfactory service by tipping people just to do their jobs, it does not promote good service, but instead laziness. If the waiter/waitress wants to make more than minimum wage, I think that they need to earn it by stepping up to the plate and giving the customer the best experience possible.

Do you have no decency? It's the fact that waiters make little to no money and heavily rely on tips to make a decent income. Tipping for service is just one of the two factors.

Im a lot more generous to delivery people. They are out using their gas using their pos car to get YOU food. Ive had friends that deliver pizza and they got paid shitty since a lot of their income is tip based. Ive heard of them not being able to cover their gas in tips.

Theres a lot more service involved in delivery. Its always 5+ unless its fucking cold or took forever.

    Thoughts on tipping?

Living in New Zealand I'm in the same boat as this.

One thing I never understood is why waiters/delivery people etc are the ones who are tipped yet they have had nothing to do with the final product yet reap the rewards.

I've heard many a story where the notion of tipping hasn't really instilled better service too and where they manually take a tip out of the cash you give them. That would really piss me off, check your privilege.

It isn't disrespectful in places where the custom is to tip for good service. They likely tip themselves when they go out as well. It is expected generally, so you're being insulting when you don't, whether you like it or not.

Then you won't be eating anywhere but fast food. Why would they care if you came back?

The alternative is to just add 15% to the cost of food, therefore removing your choice and possibly compromising the quality of service by removing incentive.

New Zealand is actually one of the countries I was referring to. The quality of staff at restaurants there is atrocious in comparison to where I live. They'll be friendly enough, but you'll pay more for your meal anyway and they won't really be inclined to visit your table more than they have to.

What does that have to do with anything? They have to invent the product to get a tip? wat

Quite the opposite really, hardly debatable even. Just compare workers who get a commission for sales to workers that don't. Which is going to be more attentive and helpful?

That isn't acceptable, I've never heard of that. Some restaurants do have a required % for large groups because it takes a lot to cater to you but it'll be upfront and there will be a sign or something.

Wow some of you people really don't get it. How the hell does tipping make a person lazy? You act like servers make soo much money, but that's not true. I'm not sure how it is in other countries, but in the United States, servers depend on tips to get paid. Yeah you can say that it's the employer's fault or whatever, but unfortunately that's not how things work here. The employer has no say. If you're a server, then you don't depend on an hourly wage and that goes for all restaurants. It's all about tips, so when you go out to eat and you don't leave them anything, then they don't get paid. Serving at a busy restaurant is hard work, so how about you not talk about something you know nothing about. Not only do you come off as a cheap fuck, but you sound ignorant as shit. Yeah the tip system is stupid, but a lot of things in life are, so quit crying because you don't want to leave a dollar tip for your measly $10 meal. Go to McDonald's if you don't want to tip. People at McDonald's don't do nearly the amount of work servers at restaurants do and they get paid an hourly wage, which is why they don't get tipped. And why don't other jobs require tips? Maybe because other jobs actually get a nice check every week and don't rely on tips to survive. Use your head. If that's so hard for you to understand, then you're probably just too young to know shit about work.

Servers in Canada get paid server wage, which is even lower than minimum wage. If a server does a good job and I have no problems with them I'll always leave 15% tip, if they did something over the top I'll leave more. But they need tips to earn an honest living. Canada you get taxed 15% anyway so just double the tax. Try working as a server for a month and you will always leave a tip.

This. I didn't realize the other side of the world didn't tip waiters lmfao. I always tip 15%. My girlfriend and I are terrible when it comes to tipping we don't really coordinate it and sometimes end up tipping something crazy like 30% because I leave some money then she leaves some money :p
