    Thoughts on tipping?

I personally do not believe in tipping because to me it makes no sense why we should tip people extra just for doing their job. Of course though if the waiter/waitress goes out of their way to serve me I leave behind some cash but that usually never happens. What do you guys think?

They actually do get paid minimum wage, and they are not the only people to get paid by minimum wage. I mean like it is arguable that factory workers work just as hard or even harder to get paid minimum wage, but they don't receive tips? Society says that it is okay to tip waiters and waitresses but it is not okay to tip other people?

If a person who works for tips doesn't make at least minimum wage their boss is expected to supply the difference. I don't tip, unless it's delivery since they pay for their own gas generally.

Unless they work off the books, and in that case it's their own problem, not mine.

I think that's just the culture of where one is from. I feel obligated to tip a good employee.

I'm not really sure about other countries, I've heard that in America a tip is expected. (not 100% sure if true)

I think that since it's a "tip", it should be given only if we feel that the person deserves it. If it's expected, I don't really get why they call it a tip, might as well make it service charge.

Even though some waiters/waitresses earn less than the minimum wage, I don't think that I must be obligated to tip them. Just because they aren't earning a minimum wage doesn't mean that I have to help them.

I generally only tip when the person goes out of their way to help me, or exceptionally impressive service.

I think it's something we should give when we think it's deserved, and not something we are obligated/expected to do.

Tipping is a ridiculous system. I live in Australia and I have never paid a tip in my life, and I likely never will. Giving good service is in the job description, so it's very pretentious to expect extra cash from patrons simply because you're doing what you signed up to do.

As for people who the majority of wages is made by tipping, that's a problem with regards to the establishment they work at, and thus not my problem.

Bunch of cheap fucks in this thread. I served for ~ 1 year at a steakhouse called outback. I provided great service and was a good server, however I only made $2.17/hr, so as you can see I was highly reliant on tips to pay the bills. .However honestly I made roughly $10-12/hr after tips, and walked away with cash every night.

You're making less than minimum wage, and that's not my fault. It's the company's fault - they should be paying you the minimum wage, and not what you're getting. However, just because you're not getting the minimum wage, it doesn't mean that customers like me are obligated to help you out with the injustice that's cause by the company you're working under.

Just because I don't wish to help pay for the expenses of a waiter doesn't mean I'm a "cheap f***", as you suggest. People like you have to understand that I'm not going to pay for what your company isn't paying you, if the company isn't paying you what you're supposed to get, it's the company's fault, not mine; why do you feel that customers must help pay for the remaining deficit?

If I don't tip waiters, it doesn't mean that I'm selfish, or cheap, like you suggest. It's just that the people who DO tip waiters are generous, not the other way around. You shouldn't expect tips, your job is to serve customers like me - I'm not paying for your service, your service is offered to me when I eat at the place.

I shouldn't be obligated to tip waiters, it's a choice, not a must. You shouldn't feel like you should get it, too. If you expect to receive tips, well, I guess you'll keep being angry.

Why am I a "cheap fuck" just because I refuse to pay the deficit your employer leaves you with? It is NOT my problem that I refuse to give someone I do not know money out of hand. If I wanted to do that, I'd give it to charity or homeless people.

I've been traveling for the past year. I've spent a lot of time with homeless people. I'm just letting you know %95 of them have either ssi, or foodstamps. You're pretty much just getting them drunk, or high. :)

I would agree with this. It provides an incentive to perform your best at all times.

Also, it is important to keep in mind that "minimum wage" for a tipped employee, in the states, can be as low as $2.13.

I've never not left a tip, usually it's around $5.00 even if I only eat a $20 meal. Tipping people who make minimum wage as appose to $3 or $4 an hour is different. Hair stylists usually get tips after cutting someones hair and they all make at least minimum wage.

Legally in the US they are supposed to be paid at least minimum wage if tips do not make them go above that threshold. It does not always happen. I think it encourages good service.

Wow... yeah everybody here is a cheap fuck. I always tip... 15% if the service isn't especially good, but 95% of the time I tip 20%.

Jeeze people if you're going somewhere to eat and pay $30 or $40, $5-8 isn't going to make a huge difference for you, but it will for your server.

I understand not tipping for McDonalds or stuff like that, but being generous is a lot more (personally) rewarding than being a cheap fuck.

I generally tip about $3-5. No tip if you dont keep my drink full and have a bad attitude. I do not tip proportionately to my bill, that is bullshit. It shouldnt matter if I buy $5 burger or a $20 steak, your work is the same.

Tipping is definitely a good thing in my view as it encourages servers to work harder and better; it's unfair if a crappy waiter/waitress gets paid the same than one who is polite, hardworking and does their job to a high standard. It's pretty ridiculous the abuse some of you guys are giving to the tipping system.

Some restaurants include the service on the bill, and in this case I guess you could justify not leaving a tip, but otherwise, you should leave a tip no question in my opinion.

I'm completely in support of tipping in situations such as restaurants. The service is generally much better in countries that tip than in those that don't. I want my drinks/salad/bread refilled often and the waiter to be friendly and quick. When I lived out of the country that would rarely happen, they'd do exactly the minimum to stay employed.

I go into the restaurant with the knowledge that I will pay a % to the staff depending on the job that they do. I understand that some people won't, but I'm fine paying a little extra for good service. Much rather that than have the cost added onto the prices, then your choice is gone completely and you pay them whether they're good or not.
