Well that sucks, I bet everyone was lookin forward to the 1 letter names and famous names like Fishy, Win All Day, etc.. lol

 

Those names are probably the main reason why banned ones arent being released. There was too much publicity, fame, fortune, drama, and RWT that followed alot of usernnames that are banned. It just makes sense to keep them out.

People should also bear in mind that although there are 10 million names being released, that does not mean that there are 10 million "RARE" names being released. 70-80% (off the top of my head statistic) of these usernames are going to be disposable anyways, but there will still be a lot to pick and choose from.

 

Pretty sceptical about people telling you what names they're after then people in the chat taking them themselves - if you're looking for something just add it to your friends list and see if it becomes available, don't disclose the name to anyone just in case.

 

We're mostly excited to see some new names make it into the community of regular players so that they can come along and showcase their gatherings.

Yeah that's true, although everyone has their own top choice username anyways. There's going to be a list released and everyone has a seemingly equal chance since that list will be publicized. If you want something bad enough you'll have a very "fair" chance at that "one" name.

 

I just see:

You have a good point but I think with such wide open opportunities there's a much smaller window for people who want to take from others. It's definitely a good idea to keep your desirable list to yourself for reasons you've listed, but I honestly don't think it will change anything.

It's like telling someone about a race, you've both still got to race to the finish line to win. Not telling anyone would only result in less possible participants in the race. If you're determined enough you'll win that race regardless of the number of participants.

EDIT: Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to convince people to tell me their desired usernames - just trying to explain how I feel about the release, and welcome users into my friends chat who have interest in this stuff.

 

Not necessarily saying you; you can only speak for yourself. Others may be in the chat for the wrong reasons, that's all.

I'm pretty sure there's no restriction to what account names will be released. Except there was a thread to white-list certain names (famous/dead players etc etc).

E: And btw someone who I guess sells rare names was posting on another thread where they said Jagex had already begun releasing I think it was 3 letter names... (they claimed to have been monitoring 3 letters names and noticed activity?) can't really confirm whether they were being truthful, but who knows I guess. :/

 

That does make sense yeah, there was too much publicity around these names and if they let em back in, it could indeed be disastrous, so it makes sense in the end not to do it. And yeah the names will prob be random names, not a lot will be rare in the end.

 

I can't wait for this, I plan to get a super awesome name!

 

There were a total of two "blips" around the time I made that post. To give you an idea, I'll usually pick up 1 three letter/number name every 2 days or so. On those days I picked up more than 15.

I mentioned that I believe it was a test run of sorts, to make certain they're not breaking the display name system or releasing names that shouldn't be released. That's the most likely scenario anyway, I'm pretty confident that's what it was.

Also, yep, it has been confirmed a few times (link) that banned accounts are not immune to their names being dropped.

I wanted to show you guys something really interesting with regards to how Jagex feels about display name RWTing



They seem to be okay with people offering and profiting off of their own usernames, I guess if someone really wants a name and they're offering game currency for it, why not, if it's for the reasonable means of enjoyment and not merchanting services.

They seem to be against people "collecting" stock and reselling in large quantities. After seeing this response from Mod Pips maybe we can expect to see some sort of future update that involves storing a previous name in a bond, and trading the "display name bond" to another player, in which case the other player can activate the bond to set the new display name. It would deem 100% security for market users and legitimate game players.

Something to suggest on the RS forums maybe?
