I think upholding our own interests is of course important. Oil being one of them. But the primary concern should be of the people; whether there's a lot to gain or nothing to gain. Trading and political relationships shouldn't be the basis of intervention, but it is a bonus if they do come from it.

It's a very subjective thing, really.

I just don't understand how protecting our oil interests in Iraq and saying we are overall helping the Iraqi people is justified. It's quite obvious that drone attacks have killed innocent women and kids, yet because we are "helping them" it is moral to force Arab oil companies to only sell their oil in the USD. The United States seems to protect our interests more than spread them globally to benefit everybody. We pride ourselves on being the biggest and the best, yet we are filled with greed and denial of being such.

Well I'm not too familiar with the US' role and demands of Iraq, being a UK citizen - it's not something we hear on the news and I don't really look in to Iraq and so on these days.

I think the Iraqi people have been given a better starting point to better look after themselves.

Same applies here with UK military engagements (if there are any). I'm not really sure of ya'lls policies and efforts currently.

When did the US sign up to be the international police officers?

I hope you volunteer to go out on the front lines and solve the issues that they have over there. Until then, pound sand.

OP: I doubt this has aired. I've seen many people saying its a hoax.

I actually agree with Roary on his point that if you have international power and influence you are obligated to use it to protect innocent people. I was just curious what he meant by protecting their interests while helping the people. It's not that we signed up to be global police officers, we are just one of the few countries that can provide help to others while maintaining our own protection.

(I personally believe the US is misusing this global power very often though)

I didnt even say or mention Americans.

Im speaking about HUMANITY. We cannot, globally, even use the word humane or humanity if we (every country in the world) aren't doing aomething about innocents being tortured, imprisoned and killed.

No, I am not a soldier. I can't even join the military because of certain requirements. But we have soldiers in Iraq, Afghanistan and so on but not in these places where real and more serious (now that we've been present in the middle east for some time - they have to stand on their own feet now) oppression is happening. The only reason we're (any military presence) where we are is for political or financial gain.

I am from South Korea and while I was visiting South Korea last summer, I had the chance to talk to a North Korean Refugee. Most of them know what is going on in the world and they do truly live in fear.
