I disagree with both street smarts = social skills and that you gain street smarts through life experience.

Street smarts is a combination of characteristics IMO. Sure social skills are ket to any street smart individual but it isnt even close to the entirety of what "street smart" is. Alot of what defines street smarts to me is common sense, which is actually increasingly less common with "book smart" types. You cant simply "learn" street smarts. Theres an intangible element there.

I certainly agree with you and your assessment of the i dont need book smarts im street smart attitude. Those guys are just plain ignorant. One does not replace the other but Id say "street smarts/common sense" are a LOT more useful in day to day life. Street smart steve certainly gets more pussy than book smart billy

I'd say common sense is number one along with experience in general. I know plenty of people who have good degrees and are very book smart, but zero common sense and are absolute morons. Street smart is important too, but only if you use it right and are pretty intelligent to begin with lol. A lot of the time, people who are very street smart have been through a lot of shit in their lives and have actually been on the streets. Struggles in the long run can make you a much better and smarter person if you manage to overcome it. I struggled with drugs for 10 years and a lot of shit came with it. I know what it's like to be at the bottom and that I definitely never want to go through it again. It's definitely made me a better person and am much more stable now because of it. I've learned to be happy and to control my emotions and without drugs, which is one of the most difficult things a person can do if you struggle with drug addiction. A lot of people don't make it either. I've seen many people end up dead or in prison over the last 10 years. Now I have my life together though, good job, nice house, back in school, and happier overall because of everything. You also can't just live your life only knowing the streets though. Being book smart is of course very important too because you build knowledge that way, but that still doesn't always make you a happy person. I believe that it's all important really. They each bring different things and it's always good to have some of both in my opinion.

This list of types of intelligence is more meaningful.

Then it would be well done to actually define what "street smarts" and "book smarts" actually are, as it is entirely open to interpretation. I simply responded with my interpretation of the question that was posed.

Given that, no my response was not off topic. Or rather, how could it be off topic given such an ambiguous question?
