    Headphones - help!

    Hi folks,

So I purchased a pair of Beats Mixr headphones from a mate a while back and I've been less than impressed ever since. You really do only pay for the name.

I've decided to get myself another pair of over-ear headphones, but I'm having no luck finding any decent ones that are affordable.

I was searching a few weeks ago and managed to find several websites, but my mind has drawn a blank and having no luck finding them again.

Could anyone suggest any good websites/company to search? Or even a pair of headphones themselves.

    Thanks,

This might be useful for you:

It has a number of alternative headphones :)

I'd also tell people what kind of budget you have as "affordable" is a little brief.

    Headphones - help!

The ones you've selected are rather decent. I would make one suggestion though: If you want professional help on headphones - don't post here. Head to head-fi.org... The people there are real sound junkies and know exactly what they're talking about.

They also go into details on different types of headphones (Open vs. Closed-Back, why headphone X is better than headphone Y, where the headphones lack or excel [treble/bass/mid], and their ranges). Look over a couple of the reviews and you'll see what I'm talking about. I've been contemplating getting a new pair of headphones myself, but I really need to get myself a new audio card or converter first. They also give you other options as well.

These are the current ones I am considering: http://www.head-fi.org/products/audio-technica-ath-m50s (The newest version is the m50x).
The thing with the m50s is that you need to swap the ear-cup pads almost immediately on them.

I currently run AKG K701s (previously amped), and so I am really really picky about my audio AND comfort levels.

I also highly recommend audio-technia atm-m50s. The stock ear-cups are fine unless you're overly sensitive. They look, feel, and sound great for the price.

Also skater you really don't need an amp/dac for those headphones, maybe when you break the $300-400 range where headphones start to have a high impedance.

I personally prefer Skullcandy. I have a really cheap pair that works just fine for me. (The Hesh 2.0) Keep in mind though, I bought these for $60. The quality is good, but not fantastic for the price I paid for them. I'm don't listen to a lot of songs with bass, so I'm pretty basic when it comes to headphones.

    Headphones - help!

Believe it or not I ended up looking at the ATH m50's myself last night. I heard they've been around for a while, but I noticed the term "Don't fix what isn't broken" being thrown around a lot too.

The m50x only seem to have a few minor changes which bump the price up a fair bit. Both the V-Moda Crossfade LP Chrome & Audio-Technica ATH m50 seem to be roughly the same price.

From the reviews I've read, they both seem to be really good, and I've even seen a few comparing the two together. I think I may be swayed more towards the V-Moda's however, as they seem pretty sturdy and look somewhat better (in my opinion).

I'll definitely have a look at the link you provided, cheers.

EDIT: Anyone happen to know how often Amazon change their prices, and what causes the changes?

I had V-Moda Crossfade LP Phantom Chrome ready to buy at £99.85 then went to dinner and got back, I went back just to check I had everything right, and price had shifted from £99.85 to £120~
Both prices are buying from Amazon.

The prices from Amazon shift daily, varying on whom the owner of the lowest price is, how much they think they can gouge out of someone - and to a certain extent (if Amazon is the lowest priced), what other comparable pairs/items are going for at the same time.

For example: Amazon is selling their pair of pants for $15.99, the next group/company is selling for $17.99... MOST of the time they won't adjust this but sometimes they'll make some tweaks to it. HOWEVER: Amazon is selling their pair of pants for $15.99, the next company/group is selling theirs for $49.99... Amazon is going to bump their price a decent amount to make their margin fair as well as continue to be in a comparable price range to others.

Yesterday I went to check my saved list in my checkout cart and 6 or 7 items had changed in price - some by a few cents and others by dollars.

Anyways good luck with your purchase! Get back to me on how much you like them as I'm always looking for a few extra pairs of decent headphones. :)

    Thanks.

I went ahead and bought them anyway. I'll continue kicking myself for a little while for holding off on them and then paying a higher price. But oh well, those things happen.

I should be getting them delivered on Monday.
Fingers crossed I will like them!
