Western Union money transfer Question

Hi I have a query to do with western union. I am looking to purchase an item in bulk from a new supplier. Although when asking for payment they want it via western union and I am not quite familiar with it. My question is if I don't receive my product am I protected? This is what there sales manager said to me.

Western union doesn' protect you. It is an unreversable payment method.
Make sure to pick a trusted seller when you pay with western union.

 

Western Union payments cannot be recovered once the other party has received the money. The only time that it can be reversed is if the money has not been picked up by the receiver yet. This is what makes it a very secure payment method for the receiver.

if they send you the money, and you look up the code to see if he did and you're like okay he sent the money i see it waiting to be picked up under my name. you give him money he can stop that WU payment before u even go to pick it up.

 

Thing is it's an international seller. It's a 2 week shipment time also so that gives him a good 2 weeks to take it without me knowing if I'm right, even if I give him my name and put his name as the receiver.

They can be reversed. Do not think that they can't. There are loads of reports of Wu taking people to court over lost money. It's difficult, but don't say it can't happen.

 

A WU payment can't be reversed when you are already physically holding the money in your hands. The only reason WU would take you to court is if you managed to commit fraud and receive someone else's payment.

 

Hmm well let me put it into a scenario. Basically I am going to be purchasing an item in bulk. They have said they Accept western union for small orders and bank transfer with big orders. I want to test them with a few, so it's classed as a small order. But I don't want to pay then not receive the package and they get away with my money. Do they always ask for the MTCN or w/e?

 

When taking money out, you need to provide the MTCN and name/location of the sender. But they'd have to trust you to receive the item first.

 

It all comes down to how trustworthy this other party is then. If they wanted to scam you, and you paid with WU, there is nothing you can do about it (unless they are a Sythe user, in which case you could get them banned).

They would have to ask you for the MTCN, otherwise, they would have no way to receive the money or even verify that you sent the payment in the first place.

 

I thought they could just give the senders name and recievers. Apparently I have to provide some sort of proof I've paid the money and it's being held or some shit before they ship out the delivery?

 

Let me explain how WU works entirely:

-If you are sending money via WU, you first have to have the receivers first and last name, their country, state/province, and city.

-To send a payment, you can either use a credit car online, or pay at a physical WU location (at a grocery store, lending shop, some gas stations, etc)

-When you send the money, the sender gets a Money Control Transfer Number (MTCN) on their receipt.

-Once you give the receiver the MTCN and your first/last name, country, provice/state, city, they can redeem the cash online or in person at a WU location.

-WU payments can only be CANCELED if the receiver has not yet picked up the money, there is no way to CHARGEBACK

-If you are the sender, make sure you are trading with a trustworthy source.

-In your situation, I assume the receiver will not ship the said item(s) until you give them the MTCN and sender info, and until they pick up the money.

Couple of notes here

to OP: This transaction is highly risky for you. For all intents and purposes, WU payments you make are 100% irreversible. The receiving party will be able to take your money and run. Unless someone can show you amazing proof that they are legitimate, do not send them a WU. Tons of people have lost money like this.

about WU: Yes, WU payments can be recovered by WU after the fact. When you pick up a WU payment, you provide identity verification. This means WU knows exactly who picked up the payment, when and where. If the payment was sent by a carder (fraud), then WU will certainly contact you and put pressure on you to return the money.

It is not easy to fraud WU. They have way more secure systems than Paypal. The guys sending fraud WU are not wasting time on Sythe, they are the big guns of the carder underworld and are likely focused on much bigger projects. This type of fraud carries huge punishment as well if caught. Due to the heavy risks and costs involved in frauding WU, these fraudsters require a high reward.

Don't confuse this with buyer protection. Calling WU and telling them you didn't receive your item is not going to get you a refund. You'll need to file a police report and go through a ton of hoops to even have a chance of any action being taken.

 

Very helpful read. I tend to lean towards paypal for medium amounts and western union for bulk, of course.. I have to fully trust the seller. What other options have you guys found more useful?
