I was listening to the radio the other day and they brought up a discussion on whether or not your dog should be allowed to be kept in vehicles on hot summer days. In another thought do you think that in certain cases animal cruelty charges should be placed against the offenders?

I ride around with my dog in the bed of the truck. Hes a pitt and just LOVES it. I dont do this on the highway or anything ofcourse but on small trips around town he adores it, he raises hell if anyone gets close when parked, other than that he just enjoys the wind.

I have seen a lot of people with small dogs leaving then in car.. Im against that. especially where I live. People die of heatstroke a lot in Texas, animals too.

My thoughts in this topic are about dogs being left in vehicles with the windows up or partially up. Not so much dogs in the back. :p

I'd say depends on the duration of it. If it's only a quick, say 10 minutes then its fine. Longer then that however, say an hour and its verging on cruelty however. Policing said issue would be a difficult task though.

Depends on the sitution really. IF you are going to take a ride on the curb and come home quick then it would be a good thing to bring your dog along but going on long trips I wouldnt say unless you going in RV

People around here leave their dogs in their cars all the time. In a couple situations the police have broken into them to take the dog and charge the owners with abuse.

It's not a good thing when the weather is real hot. Even if the windows are cracked and you *expect* to be gone only ~10 minutes it's a bad idea. It's a "better safe than sorry" situation to me. If it's a hot day and you're not going somewhere specifically with your dog (park, vet, etc), they should be left at home.

It is an offence for long periods of time with no water and no window open. I've left my dog in the car but only ever with the windows open for 30mins max. If your dogs clearly uncomfortable and roasting hot for extended periods of time you should be charged with cruelty. Cars get super hot in the summer in certain places.

Fuck no. Every single year around me there are multiple dead dogs because they get left in the car. 10 minutes if fine, just leave the windows cracked and a note or someone is going to bust your window open and call the cops and you are going to jail. Fuck those people.

Cars get super hot basically everywhere in the US. I'm in New York and 95+ days are perfectly normal.

Yea. The "heatwave" of 86 degrees that killed a bunch of people? It's supposed to be mid 80's here tomorrow.

Whether or not you should be "allowed" to? I didn't realize I woke up in soviet russia this morning. >_>

Obviously common sense would be to do whatever it takes from keeping your pet from overheating, such as not leaving it in a hot car for longer than something like running into the gas station. Someone who would bring their dog along with them probably cares about it, if you were the cause of your pet dying don't you think you'd feel bad enough? The answer isn't for someone to be thrown in a cage or pay extortion money to the government because you're uncomfortable with the possibility of harm coming to a dog.

Besides, how could they prove how long that the dog was left there without subpoenaing the store's surveillance files? What if you went inside to buy a pack of cigarettes and you walk out and some retard vigilante is smashing open your window because you've "committed a crime." What if the dog just drops dead because of whatever unknown medical condition it has and someone noticed it? Should there be an autopsy? I'm sure you can see where I'm getting at with this.

No one wants to think about their pet dying. The solution would be a non-profit like a shelter running radio ads during the summer for awareness, local commercials, flyers, chewing out the guy who comes back with his dog in the car, etc.

People do get arrested where I live for letting their dogs die in the cars. It's pretty easy to take the temperature of a car and know that 120 degrees is inhumane. Or just to wait around for awhile waiting for the owner to come back.

I wouldnt personally smash in the car I'd call the SSPCA because they can get the dog out legally.

Usually they go to large events and walk around seeing how long what dogs have been left there for an extended period. Not just pull up at the shop and break in to your car because its hot lol.

I'd certainly call the cops but if I knew the dog was in there for a long ass time and didn't look good I would fuck that shit right up.

Is it just me or there are so many more important issues to resolve than dogs in vehicles.

However if you ask me "Should a person be arrested for letting his dog die in his car", then no.
I think we have gone way overboard with protecting animals in overal.
Would I leave my dog in a small room that might overheat, no I wouldn't. But I would also politely tell you to go "fuck yourself and your ideas" if you tried to tell me what I should do or even arrest/fine me if i didn't do it.

What's your point? Where I live people get gang raped.

This doesn't really address anything that I mentioned, and what I mentioned was a very far from exhaustive list. That doesn't take into account how long the dog was left, other unknown medical conditions, etc.

My point is after a person's pet is dead, it doesn't make sense to harass the owner through the court system.

This falls along the lines of what I mentioned as being perfectly acceptable. If you gave the person a reminder that they're putting their dog in danger, or dropped a flyer on their windshield you could be making a difference without involving authorities before knowing the whole situation.
