It is odd. I'd like to think, however, it's used for non-malicious things. Advertising and collecting info does sound ominous, but realistically they're just trying to optimize the bullshit they sell you.
Annoying, yes. But they shared the info with you and you can turn it off.

The ominous stuff is happening in the background, and they're certainly not telling you about it.

    My 2 cents.

First thing I do with a new phone is check out all the settings and alter them to my liking; I thought everyone knew about this :p

in the end, they can trace any phone and know exactly where you are at any time, i-phone or not, doesn´t matter.
unless you cover yourself in tin foil ;)

you agree to this when you buy the phone and possibly when you get your carrier contract.

Quite frankly - I don't know why anyone gives a fuck that big companies have the ability to track these sorts of things. Unless you are trying to get away with a crime or something, it really doesn't matter if Apple knows that you went to Mcdonalds this morning and sat in line for exactly 96 seconds.

Of course it can. And on top of that, so can people who make apps. There is a class called CLLocation that can get your coordinates and even your altitude. How do you think Tinder locates people within a 100km radius of you? How do you think "find my phone" apps are made? To me it is an amazing thing.

    Lol, agreed.

When I bought my current phone [iPhone 5] I turned off location services when I was setting my phone up, so I can't see these :p

Having ANY type of smartphone and an expectation of any sort of privacy is absurd.

Unpleasant to see things like this. A release of information that important should be clearly stated when you're setting up/purchasing your phone. Disabled it now that I've seen this.
