I was wondering, how is Runescape (today) compared to other MMORPGs? As in population and subs? Also, does anyone see Runescape making a comeback?

Not as popular as it used to be. Has a decent amount of Twitch viewers and famous Youtube Uploaders still I suppose. However, the way that Jagex has changed the game has made a lot of people leave, regardless of what your personal opinion is as to whether or not they were good or needed changes. That's just the sad truth of it...it's a shell of what it used to be.

However, it is still going relatively strong.

As bleed duke blue has stated, it isn't as popular (or populated for that matter) as it once was. There are quite a few popular streams on RS (mainly osrs) on twitch. I still don't find it nearly as close to what it once was though.

Hmm.. on the making a comeback, it is really hard to say, but I honestly don't see it getting back to where it was.

The problem for me is that the content isn't usually that great on Twitch. It's mostly just loyal followers who have watched streamers progress through Youtube and now Twitch, or people that are just hoping to get something from a giveaway.

Some staking content is great, I'm going to go check out Twitch now :p.

It's no way near as popular as it once was, and I can't see it coming back honestly. It depends, this legacy update might change things.

As far as revenue is concerned, they seem to be doing fine. If they need to lose players to make more money, then so be it. That seems to be their belief, but that also allows them to cut down on server costs. It's win-win if they can sucker people into paying for items and gold.

I think they're doing fine and I think the game is still enjoyable for people who aren't so hell bent on being anti-Jagex. I've been playing on and off since 2005, I've gone through all the changes and I've never had a significant problem with what they've added. They don't have the concentration of sheer die-hard players that they used to, but I can't help but wonder if that's because the mass of those players have naturally moved on, not just because of the updates, and the new generation haven't quite discovered RS (since they don't advertise that well compared to say WoW) or are more interested in other types of gaming besides MMO's.

I can see RS going strong another 5 years at least.

I've researched legacy and read quotes on the maxed forums that lead me to believe that legacy will not be anything like pre Eoc or old gameplay- it will simply be Eoc without the rs3 new interface system or abilities, combat will be boosted momentum, which is actually very inefficient in Eoc. If you want old gameplay.. 07 is where you should be. Trying to make a mismatch of Eoc and pre Eoc is going to be a complete disaster.

It's not as popular as it was a few years ago but for a 13 year old game, RS is still doing pretty good.

I'm not so sure I agree with people being hellbent anti-jagex just for the hell of it. I, too, have been here since 2005. I have adapted to the changes they have made, sure, but I have not always liked them. Sometimes they add controversy into the game for no reason..and I think that's why a lot of people left. Not to mention the ever annoying "adapt or quit" motto of the new age players.

Runescape has effectively diminished interest in a portion of it's players' eyes, without a doubt. Honestly speaking, I boldly would state that botting was quite helpful to the game's allure. Obviously, within reason, I could recall not being to fond of passing by 12 tutorial island studs huddled around a yew tree. But alas, that was a niche, Andrew Gower's uniqueness; his touch, if you would has disappeared.

I wonder if Andrew Gower ever goes back to see what it's like...
