Hi, I have an acer laptop with a dual core processor, my question here today is if it would be possible to change the dual core into a quad core processor? Ive had people telling me that I could be able to do it and others have said no so id like to know before i even consider buying a better processor, i dont feel like spending another 1000 dollars on a new computer

 

Laptop components are mostly integrated meaning they cannot be swapped without some serious work. Most components other than the screen, ram, and harddrive are soldered in. It would not be worth your time and money to attempt to upgrade a CPU in a laptop.

Like Xolr said, most computer components are integrated, but I would still look to see if you can upgrade it. You can save yourself a lot of money if you upgrade it yourself. Just figure out what model number your laptop is and post it here.

 

This may seem like a very silly question, but how old is your computer and what are the rest of the listed specs on it?

To answer your question: Yes, you can in fact upgrade your processor in your laptop. However, it's a rather difficult process and one that would be almost worthless if your laptop is over 3 years old now, or does not have a half-decent graphics card on board.

My newest laptop was acquired (refurbished of course) for around $500. It's a quad-core i7 with 8GB of ram and ~750GB of space. Integrated graphics, but it gets the job done... I can actually play most light-weight games on it. The price of a new CPU for your laptop would be around the same price (assuming you're going with intel and not an AMD... AMD you might as well just buy a new laptop with an intel processor anyways [lol]).

Here was the quote I got from the person working at my local computer store - He was very knowledgeable in the computer field so it seemed on top of my already decent understanding of computers. The top of the line AMD processor for laptops right now is equivalent to an Intel i5 processor (the mid-line intel processor).

 

My laptop is about a year old or so, this is the processor that i have "AMD E-450 APU RADEON WITH HD GRAPHICS" would it possible to boost it to about 3.5GHZ?

 

Overclocking is already a tricky business on a desktop. The boost your asking for out of a laptop is almost impossible unless you want to LN2 your machine (you don't). My i7 only runs at 2.3gHz with a boost up to like 2.7gHz...

On top of that, the laptop is on integrated graphics. Safest best is new laptop, unfortunately. :/

 

Depends on the processor. Certain processors are upgradeable, others are not. Its very likely that you can upgrade it. I've done it several times before...dont let the inexperienced tell you otherwise. Generally the ulv processors are soldered in, and some of your mainstream processors have socketed and integrated versions of the same chip. An example of this is the i7 4700 mq & 4700hq. The mq is socketed, thus upgradeable. Simple research will give you your answer. Cross reference your processor to its socket, then reference over to the Intel site to see other processors compatible with your socket. Usually with acers you gotta be careful with bios support, but that's easily fixable too.

remember that he cooling system was designed around the thermal requirements of the installed processor. If the original i3/5 was 35w TDP, its best to stay around that. If your cooling system handles temps on the original CPU really well though, I wouldn't hesitate to install a 45w chip inside

 

Oh, I see now you have an and chip. Much harder to find, and chances are less for ability to interchange

 

szskateman22 has it down. You don't really upgrade CPUs on laptops, even though it is certainly possible (if they make a better one for the mobo that is in it). You can generally upgrade the RAM and put a SDD in it to speed it up but if your CPU sucks, you may as well just go out and buy a new one.

Edit: the laptop got really fucked up after over heating once, every component has been replaced but its still not running as smoothly as it used to

 

Yea. Laptops do that. Seems like you just need a new one.
