Running a Red Light Penalty?

So earlier this morning, I "ran" a red light. Supposedly I did so, even though me and three other friends in the car swore it didn't happen. Plus, I'm pretty sure the guy was trying to meet a quota or something because he just pulled some other person over again about 10-15mins after I left.

My question is, what's the penalty of this ticket?

I ran one red light before but the ticket was sent to my house, so that was just a fine and I got no points or anything on my record.

I have no interest in going to court to contest this $85 ticket even though I'll probably win, so I'd prefer to just plead guilty and pay the ticket. To be more precise about my question, what I'm mainly wondering is, will I get points on my license for this? I'd rather just pay the $85 penalty fee and call it a day, but if I actually get points on my license I'd rather just go in and contest it instead of paying the higher insurance rates.

Edit: This happened in Newark, NJ if that helps.

I'm pretty sure it's 2 points in NJ.

    Yeah, I think so too...

I guess this means that I have to go to court? I don't mind paying the $85 fine, but I reeeeeally don't want the two points on my license.

I'm pretty confident that I'd win this too because I was pulled over on my campus during heavy traffic, and there's like legit no way I could have ran a red light.

3 points starts up the insurance rates. If you didn't get any points from the last one then I don' think you would need to go to overrule it If you don't want too. But if you really didn't then just have the cop video cam as evidence or traffic cam. They can't lie with that stuff, fuck the police.

Well, I'd rather just not risk having any points at all, it's a bitch to get rid of them.

I guess I should call the court and ask them if I'll get any points for this just to be sure?

I'm like 98% sure you'll get 2 points, but you should call the courts either way and ask the other questions you have as well ;) .

Yeah, I'm certain you get two points as well but I think it might be possible to just waive them if you call the court and just pay the fine.

    Coming back to this point:

Is the 3 points thing from experience? I can't find where this is :/

The only reason I didn't get points the first time is because a picture was sent, it's different than when you get pulled over.

This is such a hassle, getting a ticket is such a pain in the ass...

A friend of mine got a DUI driving home when she was 17 (a .2 so its like half a beer or some shit). Now she's doing her drivers ed class again to get her licenses back. I was over there yesterday helping her study up a bit. This is MN law though, couldn't tell you about NJ laws.

Somebody else posted this: Do I get points on my license? In no case shall motor vehicle points or automobile insurance eligibility points pursuant to section 26 of P.L.1990, c.8 (C.17:33B-14) be assessed against any person for a violation occurring under the provisions of this act. The ticket for a violation of New Jersey Title 39:4-81, Failure to Observe Signal is the responsibility of the registered owner of the vehicle.

and this site as well: http://www.ci.newark.nj.us/government/city_departments/engineering/red_light_cameras.php

I already found it before, but I was incredibly unclear about how this particular law worked since many sites told me different things, but I suppose this is the only one that matters :p

DUIs are a bitch though, I don't think you can avoid the insurance rate increases...I'd rather just not risk dealing with that -_-

Edit: Damn, I just noticed that the thing above only applies if you ran a red light camera... not if you got pulled over...

    Running a Red Light Penalty?

Yeah, it's not really that expensive :p

But still though, getting the points is a bitch.

Apparently on a technicality, running a yellow light is the same as running a red light if your front two wheels are not under the light or some shit like that when it turns red? I forgot what it was exactly.

I called the court's customer service earlier this morning, but I won't even get an answer until a week from now because my ticket isn't even processed into the system?

    Running a Red Light Penalty?

3 years is a long as shit time though...I don't pay my own insurance (my parents do) so I don't really want to risk the increased insurance rates. I hear that they allow first-time offenses or something or the company won't raise it depending on the violation, but I'm not entirely sure.

    Yeah, I think so.

I don't want to waste majority of the day though :/ And I'm like 98% sure I didn't run it, I had 3 people in the car that were like "wtf" too. But then again, how would I even contest this? I don't think I would be able to unless if the cop doesn't show up.

If you take it to court it's possible, if this is your first driving offense.

WHAT IF I DON’T AGREE WITH MY PARKING TICKET?

If you receive a ticket issued by the Newark Parking Authority, you can submit a request to review your ticket via our Dispute A Ticket page on our website or call our office at 973-623-6335 between the hours of 9:30 A.M. and 4:30 P.M. EMAIL your dispute to [email protected].

Remember though: THE NEWARK PARKING AUTHORITY DOES NOT DISMISS TICKETS. A TICKET CAN ONLY BE DISMISSED BY THE NEWARK MUNICIPAL COURT.

If this red light citation/ticket came from an officer than you are looking at two points on your license which expire in three years. Plus the fine/court date.

However, if the ticket/citation was was a result of a red light camera than you are looking at no points on your license.

In no case shall motor vehicle points or automobile insurance eligibility points pursuant to section 26 of P.L.1990, c.8 (C.17:33B-14) be assessed against any person for a violation occurring under the provisions of this act.
