Does anyone know how much it would cost to hire a lawyer to write a Terms and Conditions for a website with a similar scope to Sythe? I've been searching around but can't find a reliable quote.

I don't think you'd have to go as for as hiring a lawyer for that.

To make sure it's 100% loop hole free and legal, That'd be the best option for him to do. Either that, or he'd have to find someone VERY experienced off of Sythe, and unless they are a lawyer/ex-lawyer, I doubt they'd have everything right. He might as well get a lawyer to write it to be safe - I don't think it'd cost that much, and it depends mainly on your local rates.

Justin is right, I need a bulletproof terms and conditions, ass-covering is more important than saving (what I hope is) a few hundred bucks.

I checked, there really wasn't anything.

I'd just find a website with similiar terms and conditions you would like that is a legit buisness and copy/paste/edit to your liking to be honest. It would take some time reading through and editing to your purposes, but would work- and it'd be free.

For a starting project, it'll be very expensive. Having a proper ToS written, along with research in the desired field, could take a fair few hours, and lawyers are known for getting paid ridiculous amounts of money per hour. It's not worth the price (which could be >$1000 depending on the lawyer/area).

If it's a gold site/RS related, try ask Arcus/R2P etc. They may have done something similar of sorts.
