Do College Athletes Deserve to Get Payed?

what of the thousand upon thousands of low income families who sell everything to put their kids into a good college? do those students who get no money from back home that don't play sports deserve to get paid? after all the school is making money off them aswell.

 

Fuck yes. If not at least they should be able to keep receiving their education if they get injured. I know of someone who's family sold of one of their vehicles and got rid of their boat to pay for the things students loan didn't cover (room board, food etc.) he went to Oregon for football got hurt on like the 5th practice (season ending injury) and was sent home. Now the family is out of money and the kids bright future is dimming down as he's working at golf zone right now.

They should pay the students so the family's don't have to go through so much shit to put them there. Or at least have protection against colleges kicking out students because of injuries they pushed the kids to get. world is fucked up.

 

If the kid in question was intelligent enough to be in that college they would have kept him on academic merit.

But no, he was there on a football scholarship and he got hurt and had to stop playing football. Its simple, dont put all your eggs in one basket. I mean that shit sucks but damn..

 

Kid isn't stupid. don't get that twisted. Got a 26 on his ACT and kept a stead 3.6 GPA (never had to take the SAT). They still pulled his shit. And he didn't put his eggs in one basket. He was a lacrosse player over a football player. He only played senior and junior year for football.

And im not trying to justify these kids making 100k a year in college. All i'm saying is there's hidden costs to the full rides that most people don't know about. And then watch a family so proud of their child sell their items to better his future, only to be denied because they decided to push the kids to hard in practice? How fucked up is that shit? They should be able to keep their education at the very lease!

 

Getting your education PAID for or atleast the majority of it is enough.

No they don't deserve to get paid. They're receiving an education in exchange for them playing football. It costs a lot for a 4 year college, especially going out of state so they're probably pulling in an equivalent of $40k - $60k a year. What more do they want? Pay them minimum wage for when they play a game or something.

 

i agree with the fact that if they are injured they should be allowed to continue the scholarship, but op isn't talking about that, op thinks they should be paid so they can spend money on clothes, go out to eat, and get some pussy.

 

Very good point. Personally I don't think they "deserve" to get payed for playing college sports. When you say deserve the word entitled comes to mind...and they aren't entitled to shit besides the free ride they're already getting. What do they need to pay for? What does that individual who has a free ride need to pay for that the average college student doesn't? Mind you that average college student most likely already signed over their soul in student loans.

I already believe professional athletes get paid entirely too much so I may or may not be jaded on this subject.

EDIT: I also believe the whole college system is fucked beyond recognition...that's for a different day though.

 

Yes but only a little. Why? Simply because they work hard (usually) to get in college sports.

 

You guys are looking past the point that they bring in so much money to the university that it seems so unfair not to get more than what the school itself costs to go there.

The football teams of Division 1 bring in millions on hundreds of million dollars each year. If you think about it, a football player is there for 4-5 years depending on if they redshirt or not. That means, they bring in that revenue and times it by the number of years they were there. Texas brought in 139$ Million in 2013. Times that by 4....That's 556$ million dollars that they helped bring in and they get paid around 20-30$ thousand a year for tuition and board. C'mon, do the math. That is not even close as to what should be acceptable.

The university sports are run like businesses, they market their teams and look to get boosters to help pay for things which also bring in more money. You take away that, huge loss of money for that university.

I get the point of an education and how it helps them down the road with jobs and possibly an NFL future, but getting paid a tiny sum of money wouldn't even pull out a stitch in the University's pocket. The money isn't just to spend on "pussy" as Delta keeps referring to. It's to get themselves nice things, be able to do other things without having to borrow money, or purchasing things for their dorm rooms, etc. Spending money. What college kid doesn't have spending money?

I just wonder if there is some sort of study on how many college footballers actualy graduate and start working at their field. I'd expect that number to decrease even further if they start getting paid so fuck no.

 

If they are paid throughout the years, that will obviously be more of an incentive to pass their classes. If they don't, they don't get paid.

 

Before you keep going on about them getting paid, how much do you think they should get paid a year?

 

I would say something equivalent to around 8$ P/h but however much time they spend on football. Not very much, just enough.

 

Ok, next question is how to they go about there hours? In games? Practice? Weight lifting? Book studies(plays)? Tape watching? Team required appearances?

They receive so much as it is. Honestly it doesn't make sense to pay them tons. I could see $4000 max a year to cover some expenses. They should find a major and get a internship over the summer to make some real money for the next year.

 

And I totally agree there. It's a tough process to work out, I have no idea how they would determine it. I'm just in favor of it. Lol

Are you honestly that naive into thinking they deserve to have money to buy new shoes with etc? they is litterally millions of kids who would love to go to college but can't even afford the books. No they don't deserve shit, i swear this country is full of self entitled pricks who think everything should be handed to them on a silver spoon.
