First day of unemployment

I'm 19 years old and I've been working at the same store since I was 16, and eventually made my way up to manager. This weekend the store went out of business. So technically today was my first day of being unemployed! For the first time in my life I literally have nothing to do, I don't start college for another 8 months and I don't really have any major commitments at the moment. I know that fairly soon I'll need to find a new job just for the sake of making a better income, I've got the experience to make a good amount of money in a few different job fields, and I've been applying, but I'm not really at the point of jumping at any random retail job that pops up.

I plan on spending a lot more time at the gym and I'd like to get into scripting a bit more now that I have the time, but as far as my interests go I'm kind of torn between continuing to pursue my computer science degree or getting more into writing, as writing a novel is something that I've been thinking about for some time now.

And recently I've been making money through buying an reselling on ebay as well as making some cash via runescape and virtual good sales, I am also eligible for unemployment which in combination with my ebay sales should basically provide the income of a basic job.

Anyway, what do you guys think I should do? Have any of you had a similar experience in being unemployed but without the need to immediately find a new job? Any ideas for a fun lifestyle change or some advice for online resale?

What industry was the job were you managing in exactly?

 

Retail/Hardware with a mix of contract tech support.

 

I don't really agree with the claiming unemployment solely for the reason that you can. I would say get a job and stay busy until college hits. When college hits you're going to be busy again.

8 months is a long time, look for a new job! Maybe try to find something completely different than your old job and try it out. Life experiences man!

 

I'd look for a job in a different area because you obviously weren't a very good manager if the store went out of business.

 

I know the feeling just keep on keeping on man it will be ok. Just look for a new job and try to make money else where wile waiting just do not get stressed out man that's the worse thing to do.

 

Have you considered collecting unemployement $$. Usually when you become unemployed, your employer gives you lots of paper which includes an application or something to get unemployement money.

 

Yeah I actually just filed for unemployment $ today, but I'd still prefer a job. But like I said, I'd rather do something I'll actually like, rather than just jump straight into a job purely to collect a paycheck.

 

Clearly you must be a child. Companies go out of business all of the time. This has nothing to do with the manager. If the market is bad company owners tend to sell/close their business.


Collecting unemployment is not the be all end all. It's only temporary until you can find another job. No one can collect unemployment for the rest of their life (as I know you're aware). Have you looked into a job with NCR (National Cash Register)? It's a tech savvy company and you should also pursue your college degree in Computer Science when that opportunity arrives.

Thanks for the backup =P. Yeah Hardware stores aren't really getting a lot of business this time of year and we've had to deal with constant construction being done on the main road in front of the store. And no I haven't heard of NCR, but I'll definitely check it out!
