A bit of a computer problem

    Hello,

Okay the original issue was that the monitor shut itself down and was stuck in a "Power save" mode, among other problems which are listed below, i took it to a local PC shop so they could test it and see what the problem was. They identified the motherboard and processor to be an issue and so I replaced them both.

Well i'm not that great with computers but i know enough to build one with minimal problems. Up until now that remained and I've never had a problem this annoying to try and overcome before, anyhow I've got a massive problem of no power going to the motherboard. Originally with everything but the graphics card, processor and fans disconnected the motherboard had power to run those things but the on and off button didn't work. But once everything else was connected it failed to give power to anything and everything connected.

I've got a series of photos that you can look at, some are with the old power supply and some with the new, the new one being the Corsair CX500M:

Can you explain this in more detail? What parts of that PC are brand new?

There's not really much else I can say, the biggest problem is that there seems to be no power actually going to the motherboard, Apart from that I have no idea what is wrong.

The motherboard and the processor are the only components that are "brand new".

Have you double checked all the wiring? Have you tried using that thingy where you can see if electricity is actually going through? Sorry I'm missing the word in english..

From what I've read on your post the problem might be on wiring.

Btw the last time I had that power save mode thingy, the VGA cable was sliced a bit, I replaced it and it worked perfectly till today..

Yeah, I wouldn't have thought the wiring would have been a problem because most of them are new as they came with the new power supply.

This whole issue was kinda a knock on effect from the "Power Save Mode" problem, I'm trying to remember exactly what I did from that point onwards.

Have you tried the PSU in another machine?

Also, I know this sounds kinda stupid, but did you turn the PSU on at the back? Most of them now have an on/off switch next to where you plug the mains electricity in.

Well is your monitor plugged into the graphics card or the ports supplied by the motherboard. If you have plugged it into the motherboard then that may be your problem as it may be faulty. From you saying that sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't and that it displays nothing then the motherboard could be the fault.

If it's plugged into the graphics card then it could still be the motherboard yet its more likely to be the graphics card itself. If you have another system lying around it would be really useful to test each part individually as best you can.

    Goodluck

The monitor is plugged into the graphics card, i wouldn't see how it could be the motherboard as i only bought it last week. I had to test each part of the system to see which one was causing the "no power" going to the motherboard but seen as that issue is solved i'm back to square one really, nothing shown on screen.

could be your gpu, is there a warning tone when you start your computer?

when you said you bought it last week, you got warranty left, just bring it back and get a new one

PSU. Check to make sure it has enough power to run all your junk (gpu, proc, HD's etc..) You can also buy a voltage meter for relatively cheap to check out that it is outputting the proper amount of power at each of the cables.

It could also be your GPU. Do you have the drivers installed properly and all that nonsense? If not, your computer won't be able to use the GPU. It also can't use the GPU if there isn't enough power going to it.

I'm just gonna stop there, it's most likely your PSU.

I had this problem when I got a new video card. My old 500W PSU couldn't handle it and would just cut out right away. Upgraded to 750W and haven't had a problem since.

    Worth trying that.
