Sythe, what is your first memory of using the internet?

I will start, it was back in the good ole days of dial up internet. That funny noise of pshhhkkkkkkrrrrkakingkakingkakingtshchchchchchchchcchdingding*ding" will forever be ingrained in my mind. I was in fifth grade at the time and over at a friends place he had AIM (AOL instant messenger) I remember asking him what that was, while we searched for cheat codes in video games.

I went home and asked my dad if we had something like that and he said yeah. I remember going online to neopets, and nick.com (the shit back then) I played some silly flash games and I literally thought it couldn't get any better than this. Then years later I learned of runescape ha. You can say what you want about the graphics, the fact you could play the game on a 14.4kbps dial up connection was a game changer for me.

Now a days, we have Youtube, Netflixs, and online gaming but I think it's not to remember where we came from before we had all this cool stuff. So let's hear them ya'll what's your first memory of the internet?

 

Neopets was my first game unless I'm mistaken. It's funny how they still have so many of the things that I first did when I played. The games were only slightly updated and the overall graphics were updated but the concepts are exactly the same. Another fond memory was my first msn account back in grade 5. Msn was the greatest thing back in the day. Talking to your friends on the computer using typing seemed like it couldn't become any better. Then skype came along but anyhow it was still awesome for its time.

 

Same as you. Good ole dialup. Was only allowed to use the internet twice a week for an hour each time during school months. Most of my time would be spent on Runescape and Neopets (primarily Runescape).

One thing I'll always remember is while in grade 5 and 6, me and a few mates would go to the local library after school, and play Runescape and Stickdeath their for an hour. You would have to have a library card and pre-book the computers a day in advance. After that, Maccas and walk home. So I guess...I used the internet for 3 hours a week opposed to 2 haha.

 

7th grade, I went to the library every day after school to play runescape. Lucky for me I didn't really have a limit but you could go up to a computer and type in your number, we all had our library numbers memorized I remember getting pissed one day because I died in the wild, and while trying to get my stuff back my mom was like I'M READY LETS go. There went full rune lol. And I got yelled at ha. But those were the days before laptops ha.

 

I remember first using dial up with an old as nobs Mac about grade 5 or 6. I miss those noises. I found out I could save pictures by dragging them to the desktop, so I downloaded thousands of thumbnails of birds (god knows why).

 

haha dial up. you couldn't use the landline phone while connected, memories of my mom coming to shout at me for being on it too long when she wanted to phone somebody.

same as ^. I used to go mad when the phone was being used though. Think switching to broadband was like a dream come true at the time.

 

Haha Dial Up was always fun to use. I would always get bitched at for using up the internet to play games (miniclip, runescape, etc). I'd be on for hours upon hours, and I would always tie up our landline phone

 

God it was so long ago...

First thing I can remember is playing "Assault Cube".

 

I'm going to have to say probably Neopets, but i'm sure I used it before that somehow haha. But my latest memory is Neopets with my cousin during christmas

Probably discovering Youtube when I was like 11. I thought it was hilarious when looking back at the same videos... ehh. Then I started RuneScape properly at about 12 after previous attempts before and not even being able to talk to the first tutorial guy cause I didn't know how to use the arrow keys. Compare that to 5 year olds now it seems daft.

 

I'm thinking it was Neopets. It would've been at the time of dial up, I actually remember playing Runescape at the local library which was beside an auction house which my parents would let me go to while they were auctioning. Out of the many tries I had while I was there I never made it through the tutorial.

 

LOL. Omg, my friends and I used to do that as well. Good times. Renting PC's because our dial-up was so bad or the phone kept getting in the way.

Kids these days got it E-Z.

 

I had my own laptop my uncle gave me, and I would sneak on late at night (late being like 9 pm since I was in 4th - 5th grade..) We had 2 phone lines, so i would always sneak onto one of the lines by connecting up via the modem jack in my room. Unfortunately, the lights would blink on the downstairs phone when a line was in use/ being used and I'd get caught numerous times lol. I always got on to talk on AOL Instant Messenger. I was so in love with this girl haha. Oh man..the elementary and middle school days...

 

Oh my god. That old AOL signing in sound. I used to love playing games on miniclip after school.

Remember when you couldn't use the land line if you were on the computer, or it would kick you off? OMG!

Cartoon network games were awesome too. After my brother decided he wanted to start playing games, we started fighting over the computer (obviously ) so we started going to the library everyday we could, until close. Good times

 

first grade of elementary school, when I was like 7. I used polish messenger 'gadu-gadu' to talk with dad because I had no mobile phone and he worked very long hours. I was mostly playing Gta I, vice city and later San Andreas then cousin wanted me to kill few goblins for him when he went to bathroom, I liked that and later on wasted 5 years playing RS lol

 

I remember Away Messages and Profiles, always wondering if I was featured in anyones away message or profile/ bio area. :love:

 

Haha when I was in school we only had the one piece Apple computers and we could do the old Macro Keys typing or play the Cross County Canada game (everything was type command).

Absolutely! I appreciated ANY time I could spend on the computer. 1/2 hour at most solely for the reason that we couldn't tie up the phone line for too long.

 

Used to play pokemon crater back in the day This was like 3rd grade lol
