What is the proper response to whats up??

Alright, I HATE it when people says what's up, or sup, to me. Sometimes I don't really know how to respond. Like if somebody just comes up to me and says what's up, am I supposed to say hi, or just go on and tell them what I'm up to? Or if I say hi to somebody, and they say what's up, sometimes they just keep walking so it's not like they really want an answer. I feel stupid when somebody says what's up and I'll say oh nothing, what about you? and then they don't answer so I'm not sure if they meant it as a hi, or if they really want to know. Ugh. I'm sorry if this sounds really stupid, but it bothers me! Thanks :-]

 

Generally, 'what's up?' means 'What are you currently doing?' (aka. What's happening).

For example, let's say I am walking to the shops and see a friend along the way and he asks 'What's up?'. I would reply saying 'Walking to the shops,mate. What about you?'

Just practice socializing more. You'll get the hang of it. These sort of things just improve with time and experience. I used to be really awkward, but now just feel that way from time to time. Putting myself in social situations regularly has helped me make substantial gains.

I try to cover it all if im not sure. For some people I just know what they mean since I just know them.

Zeus, you kind of answered your own question. The response depends on the context of the situation. If someone greets you but doesn't seem as though they want to engage in an actual conversation, then a brief 'nothin much, you?' or even just 'the usual' should suffice. I don't think I've ever been in a situation where the person who asked 'what's up' doesn't say anything after I respond. Unless by 'say', you mean via text message, in which case its a completely different thing.

In any case, if the other person does seem interested in making conversation, then you must respond accordingly. Perhaps you are in a hurry, so you might respond to a 'what's up with "Hey, not much. I'm just on my somewhere do something" but then add that the two of you should catch up later. But if you have the time to spare, and are yourself wanting to converse, then you should do so.
