News reel? Opinions please

I sent this to Sythe, it's something I think would be a nifty/useful feature if it's something he could see being added. Just want to know if anyone else likes it.
Basically, a carousel type news reel that would contain new events, features, important announcements etc and would be updated regularly (if this is possible, already PM'd Sythe to ask).
I made a quick version on paint. Obviously this would be properly coded and look a lot cleaner. It would only appear on the homepage. Just google image search "HTML carousel" or "jQuery carousel" or something.

Obviously I know nothing about coding so how this would work/be implemented, I don't know. If it were possible though:

• Do you think it's too much / too busy for the top of the page?
• Is the whole look too image intensive (with all the icons at the top etc)?
• Would you like a news reel at all or do you think it's pointless? (E.g. we already have the news section, announcement feature and community general section for these)
• Any alternate ideas that improve upon mine?

UserCP and Quick Links could be combined and reduced to this:

If anything a feed of the 10 most popular threads for the day may be useful. I don't think three icons alone would help drive traffic, and updating them wouldn't happen frequently enough.

 

I like the general idea of it. It will help members receive news with ease and I don't think it will clutter the page, seeing how this will only be implemented to the home page. I always seem to miss the game tournaments, and I know this will help me out with that. I have always thought the User CP/ quick links were a mess so I like that too. All and all I think this will be a great addition to Sythe. I can't wait for the final product.

 

Agree with Nick on this. I don't see a need for this, and, personally, I don't feel like a few images would drive enough traffic to be worth the effort.

But I already feel it's cluttered enough and isn't really needed.

The user CP/Quick links change is fine to me though.

I think if it is the same size as the example and centred at the top of the page then it would be a great feature

 

I think if the size were reduced and it were a combination of featured threads/popular threads then it would be a good idea. It could draw attention to sections that people do not frequent as much as usual. Market threads should be excluded from it though as they'd probably have the most attention and having them at the top would only be doing the shop owner a favor and not sythe.org as a community.

 

I personally like it. Something new wont hurt, top area of page is cool

 

Should have some option to hide it, perhaps accessed in your user settings, for those who don't want to see it as some people have stated above. But personally I like the idea, support.

I'd like that. Frontpage is boring as fuck right now, and would be nice to see whats going down around Sythe.

Well it can be fine-tuned if people are liking the concept / if it's going to (or can) happen

 

I like it as well you'd just have to have someone who is willing to update it constantly.

Sure, I like the idea regardless if the implementation (If its like your picture, or hottest threads, or latest threads, etc). As long as it looks appealing visually I can only see it being of benefit to the forum.

If there's a hide option, sure. But for people who uses mobile devices would have the page stretched and the text to subsections/thread names would be smaller than usual.

Would be a neat feature, I rarely dwell outside the spam forum unless I see a thread in a sub section with a title I am interested in. Would also be nice to see the most popular threads, which could be based on views and/or something. Problem would be manipulation though.
