Sythe Chat -> Client

Hey guys.
Since I seen SytheChat alive I though about abit different way to use it.
What would you say about making client for it ? I think that would work better, sometimes our browser crash, get frozen when for example Flash player crashes and we don't stop plugin.

I also through about something like SytheChat archives/history. It would solve problem of prepared/faked screenies if it officially comes out. Also size of SytheChat is not too big currently, maybe could you implement option to it so it will resize as we resize our browser windows with SytheChat ?

I'm sure all this will happen eventually.

On the other hand when it comes out to the public it'd be good to see it linked somewhere at the top if it was to stay alive.

 

I think the archive idea to stop fake screen snaps is good as it will make it safer. Maybe when or if activity for it increases then it will make sense making these changes.

 

Excellent suggestion, and something that I've already mentioned twice in the sythechat thread.

My sythechat gets buried under chrome tabs/windows all the time, I'd be much more likely to use it if it was a dedicated client such as skype or msn. If we leave it like it is I have a feeling it'll only used by a select few and then die out like the irc.

History is also an excellent idea, I'd like to see that as well.


I have one more suggestion. A way to be directed to the persons sythe profile that you're talking with, to make sure its the same person that you're thinking of (because of similar names, spaces in names etc).

 

Every conversation in Sythe Chat is logged on the site's servers, and giving Rich a date/time and the person (people) you were talking to allows him to run a lookup on your conversation. He confirmed this to me earlier today in chat.

I don't mind the client; Matt and Rich have been working to tweak it for smooth running and reduced crashes. I do like the idea of being able to resize chat, though.

 

No need, just use an xxmp client for now...

Maybe just a way that we can access that ourselves then? (forgive me if we already can, I haven't uses it too much due to there not being a client)

Ehh, even so its good for people who keep more than one chrome window opened at once. I think if there was actually a client instead of just opening a resized chrome tab the sythechat would pick up a whole lot faster.

A "client" already exists. Just download any xmpp client, and connect to the server.

Will there be a web-browser chat based available for all.

 

That still isn't ideal/severely limiting to the future capabilities.

Say that it already exists if you'd like, but I really think it would be more successful if there was simply a download as well as the web version.

 

There already is one, it's released in the donor lounge currently for testing purposes. Once it's complete, it'll be released to the public.

This would require that someone code an application specifically made to connect solely to the sythe xmpp server. Not sure anyone would be up for doing that, but I guess if they want to, then more power to them. Only problem I see with this is possible security holes seeing as the person who's developing it, is doing it specifically for sythe and if they have malicious intentions, it could end badly.

As for the third party xmpp apps, there's far less (though obviously still there, as any third party program could pose a risk, regardless of the creator) chance of the creator utilizing the application in order to target sythe specifically.

Finding and using a xmpp application is not difficult by any means, and having one specifically tailored to our needs is really unnecessary in the long run I feel. Either way, like I said, if anyone wants to write one up then by all means.

 

If you guys create a good guide for a popular xmpp client, we can sticky that and link that when sythechat gets out of beta

 

I think that the largest benefit of a dedicated client would be new user usability. If we had a client it would set us worlds above other sites like this. If I were a new user I would think that was the coolest thing in the world buy couldn't be asses to read a guide on how to get something that I may use once to work.

I just think there nay be a missed opportunity here.

 

I just quickly tried connecting using the STACK API but wasn't getting a response from the server, I need to read the STACK documentation and then would probably be up for making a client.
