    A New Runescape?

Not sure where this would go but...

I was thinking the other day about how difficult it would be to create a java based game from scratch. Apparently the Gower's started RS from their basement with a couple of severs and since we all know that RS3 has been a colossal failure perhaps now is time to introduce some competition. Although I'm sure if this was possible someone would have done it by now?

Although I have a degree unrelated to computer science [marketing] it can't be that hard to learn CS concepts from a decade ago? Of course this would have to be a collaborative effort from different disciplines.

I know it sounds vague, but I'm curious on the viability of this venture?

will prolly get sued by Jagex like most big RSPS, unless you make a totally different game.

Of course to avoid copyrights it would be a different game/theme.

It could work but in order to outgun Jagex today, you will need to surround yourself with capable & talented coders & developers & all that. I dont know much about this but i have a few friends who have made small-time pc games & they had to toil around so much just to produce average quality games that dont sell very well. Runescape has a big fanbase & trying to compete with them needs a lot of guts, skill & talent. Good luck finding these types of people. With the right people, anything can be achieved.

Wouldn't be the same. I guess 07 is the only viable thing that will come along.

    Do we?

I know that Jagex is generating more revenue than they ever have, I know that Jagex are employing more staff than they ever have, I know that their shareholders and venture partners are investing more than they ever have.

Jagex does not exist to make you happy. First and foremost they are a business; one which survive and grow like a living organism.

So please, tell me, how are they "failing"?

He said RS3 is failing, and that's true. He never said Jagex is failing.
RS3 has failed it's customers; evident in the masses who have quit and the low numbers of players who still continue to play compared to before the huge updates.

Jagex is a business and you are correct, it is succeeding. Howver he correctly stated that RS3 is a game, and it's sure as hell failing it's customers/stakeholders, maybe not it's owners/shareholders.

    A New Runescape?

It takes years to make a game like that and for all we know one could be in the workings but we just haven't heard about it.

I'm surprised there aren't any games that would interest the clan world. Runescape was a one of a kind game but sadly it went down the wrong path and chose to build up it's skiller/achievement playerbase rather than it's pking playerbase.

There is a difference between failing and monetizing. Runescape has been losing players for the past 6 years. Sure, they had record profits, but that is because of the solomon's store, squeal of fortune, and increased membership fees. It doesn't represent the game becoming a larger success, and it certainly isn't sustainable.

    A New Runescape?

The problem is that these days a game like runescape classic probably wouldn't even get played.

Think about it, are kids going to play a simplistic outdated looking java game or are they going to pick up grand theft auto, call of duty, or elder scrolls online?

Not only that but there is massive competition from other low budget games trying to break into the market.

You'd really have to have an excellent and unique idea, talented programmers, and money to invest in your idea. Even then the chances of it becoming big like runescape did is pretty small.

Unless you can find yourself a niche in the MMORPG market, then you're screwed. Anything too similar to RS/WoW will get copyrighted.
