what constitutes as hipster music?

Inlisten to a little idie rock/folk/pop. Is this considered "hipster" music....i honestly don't understand the definition of "hipster music".

No, no. Hipster music is anything that claims to be anti-music or anything that is literally just like white noise and shit. Indie folk was a movement a long time before hipster was a thing.

 

This. Im taking a music in lit class and the teacher asked us what we thought hipster music was and this kid started listing people like jake bugg/other indie folk artists). Then he said and i quote "iv never listened to him or know his genre"


I face palmed and proceeded to mutter profanities and laugh under my breath. Then he gave me an awkward look.


I find it ironic because we are doing stuff on BOB DYLAN the king of folk and he says jake bugg is hipster music.

 

I hate it when people refer to hipster or mainstream music. I also hate it when people say that they prefer "underground" or indie music when they have no reason to do so asides from the fact that they are riding the anti-hipster/mainstream bandwagon.

Find a genre you like and stick with it. Too many people trying to base their interests around the social medium. Hardly any of my friends like my music but fuck 'em. I like it and that's all that matters.

 

I never even associated my music i listen to as "indie or underground or hipster". I listen to a lot of rock. When i think of "indie" rock i just think of it as our generations genre of rock and roll. Same how in the 90s people referred rock to "alternative rock" its just the style of that specific genre of music(that was most "popular") in that decade.

Hipster music is the shit no one listens to, or the unpopular shit. If by some miracle it picks up and gains popularity it loses hipster status.
I'm convinced hipsters dont really enjoy listening to the music so much as they enjoy listening to stuff that doesn't have a following.

 

because people who embrace the hipster look strongly enjoy listening to it on their 2nd gen ipod classic while they use their macbook pro on starbucks wifi to upload photos to facebook that were taken with a $2000 dslr camera

 

Hipsters are pretty new phenomenon but they're plenty of them around, quite a lot of them. So obviously the music is popular and a shit ton of people listen to it, hipster and non. So wouldn't that effectively make it not hipster? Therefore defeating the purpose of listening to it. If you truely wanted to be different and listen to unpopular music you would listen to bee bop or some shit from the 20s.

I guess what im trying to say is that as soon as a group of people(hipsters) found a common genre of music to listen to by definition of being a "hipster" it would automatically not be hipster anymore, and effectively make it null.

 

Bands like Old Crow Medicine Show and Th' Legendary Shack Shakers have been doing 'indie' folk since the 80s and 90s before alot of hipsters were born.
