How many of you use a torrent at university?

How many of you have been caught?

What do you use to remain safe if you haven't been caught?

I heard that VPN's are generally used, is this true?

Do any of you have an recommendations on what VPN to use?

    Don't go to Uni.

Never. UK ISPs don't really care to be honest.

    Nothing.

Some people use it. If your ISP don't care then there's no real need.

No. Google the best ones for reviews and you can figure out yourself which works best for you.

I doubt the ISPs will care, so go ahead. I do advise you to use a VPN just in-case, Private Tunnel is a good one but you have to pay after the trial has expired. You could probably torrent a VPN if you want to run the the risk without one once.

    Having to ≠ wanting to.

Some people prefer to pirate/torrent. I'm one of them. Uni connections usually utilize a T3 line which provides ample bandwidth for torrenting (providing they don't throttle the speeds)

If you're worried about getting caught, I'd avoid it. I don't know how they manage the access but if it's all completely public the chances of them tracking you are fairly slim. Just use a private torrent tracker and you should be fine seeing as the risk of being hit for DMCA is a LOT less likely. I've personally got over 10TB seeded on the private tracker I use and have never had a DMCA from my ISP.

Funnily enough, I've actually had e-mails from my ISP stating I should scan my PC because they feel that I'm infected due to my high bandwidth usage (I normally push 2-3TB of usage a month) - These stopped several months back though as the usage has been constant.

    Great information!

I am kinda worried about torrenting because my school does monitor and throttle speeds...

For example, I was using an ethernet and downloading a few games on steam and they shut off my jack/connection to my mac address. Everyone else's wifi worked, but no one when connected to the jack could work.

Does this hint to them monitoring or something?

If it's MAC filtered and they have logs of what user uses what MAC/Jack, then you do not want to torrent. The excessive bandwidth usage will get you shut off and hemmed up real quick.

even if I invest in a VPN? Just the sheer bandwith will get me caught?

What if I bring my old netbook and do not register it with the school but use it? Will it do the same just based on bandwidth? or will they not be able to because it is not registered?

I'm not sure how your school manages their port security, but it may not be possible.

Depends on whether or not they care. Just do some Googling before you go to see if they actually enforce the rules or not.

I have tried googling my universities name and then torrenting and nothing came up under the search results. Should I be looking for something specific in the search?

Usually if you don't register with the school you can only get on the unsecured wifi which won't let you torrent. At my school there was a 10gb daily limit and then your internet was just shut off. You didn't get in trouble for reaching the limit, you just couldn't go over it. So look into if you have a bandwidth limit. I wouldn't use public trackers though, my roommate got a cease and desist letter related to something he downloaded on tpb.

    I never used public trackers.

My school doesnt have a daily limit, some people have streamed like 100 movies at once just to clock up bandwidth like assholes all day.

So stay away from public trackers, try to use a VPN, and don't seed?

Is there a way to look up how strict ISPs are on torrenting if I know the ISP's name?

I am considering buying a throw away netbook to torrent and just not registering it and doing it threw an ethernet port.

Do you think the school keeps track of the jacks that are in each room?
