    What dog to get :)?

Well my girlfriend thinks we are not getting a dog (after she keeps wineing for one) and I'm going to get it as a christmas present for her :) <3

Now if I had my way I would get one of theese

But we have a 18 month old child and wouldn't be suitable haha.

Now I would like a friendly dog but not a 'womanly dog'

As I don't want to look like this

    -----------------

Must be a smallish / medium dog, friendly.

Is that a rotty? They are actually really friendly & soft.

I have a Labrador myself, super intelligent and very good with kids. Easy to train but need a lot of exercise, especially when they're young.

Are you home a lot/would the dog be on it's own a lot? If so, don't get a working breed like a spaniel or a collie - people make that mistake all too often - they need a load of walking.

Yeah rotty, I know they are but my girlfriend would be abit over protective of our daughter :).

Ahh I thought about a labrador but doesn't quite catch my eye haha. Normally we are at home alot, but we often go out but as I own a truck we can take the dog :D. Also I go running most nights for a few miles so I would take the dog with me.

You should adopt something that needs a home! Get an adult and no house training needed (hopefully).

Problem there is there's never usually anything suitable for A) First time owners or B) Family's with small children. The family I stayed with tried to adopt one from Dog's Trust and there was literally nothing suitable for either of those categories.. but you never know!

Labs are cute, how can you say no?!

Springer spaniel - May be a good bet if you're out running. It's pretty small and very energetic as well as intelligent.

Retriever - Super family friendly as well as cute and intelligent
    [IMG]

Beagle - Very energetic and intelligent. Small breed.

Shiba Inu - Very clean, easy to train and playful.

Vizsla - very recommended for children as they're gentle. Easy to train if you know what you're doing.

Whatever you get, definitely take it to puppy training classes if you have a young child or you'll end up with behavioural problems. Don't let them get bored, make sure you stick to a routine of a big walk a day at least. It's a tough commitment!

What about a Husky? They're very timid but playful and good around children. It's a tall dog but not renowned for being aggressive at all; they shred a lot of hair. Beware of that.

You can get all sorts of puppies too.

The thing with Beagles (I have two): They need a lot of exercise or they get fat. They love howling at EVERYTHING. They will also run away if they get a smell. We have an invisible fence and my one beagle has two shockers on and she still will run through the damn thing sometimes.

Why not a sheep dog? I have one, and he's medium sized and not aggressive at all.

Could look at cats if not dogs...

I wanted a Staff or a Rotty, but I got a Jack Russell as a present for Chritstmas.
He is the best dog I've ever had, they are really intelligent dogs, they're small which means low food cost (small shits to pick up too), they look great and they're perfect size for your children.

Who cares what you look like walking them? You want your girlfriend/wife and your kids to like them. I'm 6'5 and built and my Jack Russell is tiny and people don't say shit.

Huskies are awesome and will always be my favorite dog. I've had one for 12 years and I love her. They aren't easy to own though and I wouldn't get one if you don't have a fenced in yard or aren't willing to walk them daily. They need a lot of exercise and are one dog in particular that can never be let loose or taken off a leash. It doesn't matter how old they are or how well trained, if they ever get loose, then they will run non-stop without paying any attention and won't stop until they run of out of energy. They aren't very loyal either. They are built that way, which is actually one reason that makes them great sled dogs. They run like hell and are great at sensing danger and will ignore their owner if they sense something that you don't. I've chased down my dog many times and it's a real bitch. They are fast as hell. They are fun dogs though and great with children. They also tend to be healthy dogs and live for 12+ years. Not to mention the most adorable dogs ever :)

    My husky <3

Rots are great dogs too. Very similar to a pit though, so they might not be the best around children because they are very strong and have a lot of energy. They are friendly, loyal, well-trained, but aggressive at the same time. I personally like that in a dog, but probably not too good around a young child.

I'm only into big dogs, so I would personally say go with a German Shepherd. It's definitely what I'm going to get when I get a dog. They are friendly, loyal, well trained, energetic, fun, and just overall great dogs. They can be expensive though. Purerbreds can go for over 2 grand. Also Golden Retrievers and Australian Shepherds are good dogs. I don't really know much about other breeds. I've had a lot of experience with doxins and Jack Russells as far as small dogs and I can't stand most of them. Of course some people might disagree though. It all depends on what you like.

My friend's dog and the next dog I want.

Don't buy a dog, adopt one. I'm sure you'll find a dog there that you will simply fall in love with and you will be saving its life.

    Get a husky.

I have two and love them dearly. They're great family dogs and are extremely loyal (no worries of them turning on you).

The only con about them, they shed.
