So do we front you the money first so you buy parts and then it gets shipped to us or do you buy the parts and assemble it and then we buy the PC?

 

It depends on the user to be honest, in most cases the user would front the payment for parts/warranties and I would order the parts and then assemble/test the pc. Once I've decided its satisfactory I'd show them that its in working order and ask them to pay for the shipping/build fee and send it off to them.

For users that I consider especially trusted or lower end builds I'd consider other options such as building it first before the payment is made. Essentially I'm just trying to avoid putting out hundreds/thousands of dollars for parts for a user that backs out or is unable to pay when requested.

side note: I can have the users ship me the actual parts if that makes them more comfortable than sending the money as a cash payment.

Bump, didn't get a chance to update my thread yet due to some coursework but I'll get around to it eventually!

 

Wouldn't build fees + shipping + western union fees be greater than the little saved by doing a custom build in almost all cases?

I considered making a service like this a year or two ago, but always came to the conclusion that after all those changes, there was no value left for the customer.

 

I've actually priced it out and there is still a lot of benefit in doing this way. It still comes out cheaper than equivalently spec'd pre-builts and obviously comes with its benefits ("factory" overclocking, choice of case, better power supply/general build quality, etc). My 10%ish build fee + shipping/moneypak fee is a lot less than the markup companies do on the components on pre-builts + shipping + tax. I'm not charging a whole lot for it because its something I enjoy, because of that no online site/pre-built can really compete with my prices. If I were to charge a 40-60% markup like most online retailers, then obviously the value for the customer would be diminished.

I agree, the thread still needs a couple things. I'm working on getting a google order form completed, clarifying a few things, getting some gfx made for the thread, and then I'll try and include some pictures. I'm doing a budget custom gaming build right now that I did for under $430 and that might be something to show off a little bit. I'm also in the process of building a computer for a real life client so when that's finished I'll post it as well.
