Just for practice really. From what Ive seen hes the most prominent artist in the US currently. He did the 'yes we can' art for the Obama campaign and continues to get fucking awesome project requests.

Couldnt hurt to learn a few of his fundamentals.

 

Good attempts but if you really want to master this style try learning to vector first.

Its more about replicating the style than quality. If i was to professionally make one it would be vectored.

 

Exactly, vectoring is going to be what plays out the most in the pieces from what I've seen in his work.

 

Im more trying to interpret patterns and reoccurring effects than concern myself with picture quality for now. It wouldnt be very hard to vectorize these images using the auto trace function in illustrator, but again - I dont have it at the moment. I need to 'download it again.

Im looking for things like...

-how to adjust the color levels so it's 4 toned or minimal color
I just used color, brightness and contrast adustments in PS. Maybe thats all it is? I'll also try use a clipping mask w/ stripes on a shadow next time..
-Layout patterns, and how to stumble upon them.
Ive just been placing basic shapes then building around them and trying to feel out the spacing etc. I need to get better at different thicknesses.

As far as the decals, Ive just been doing a scribble, then copying the layer and flipping it horizontally. It tends to look pretty cool most of the time and is really quick.

I see the style you're trying to go for, but your details look like stamps, or wingdings, I think that instead you should do a little bit of fine detailing, such as inscriptions, or very small detailed tribal pattern, such as Celtic knots. But not too much, just an accent, that would make it look a lot more professional, and would give you space to fill up rather than just stamping. Also try to keep everything geometric, I've been seeing too much symbols for my taste. I really do like the color scheme and the style you're doing, keep it up.

My favorite is this one because it's simple and very geometric. I just think there'd be something better to put than the butterflies.

The first helpful comment Ive gotten haha thanks. Im surprised you like that one, I quickly came to hate it. But yes, Ill keep in mind not to go too overboard with the 'stamping'. Im actually thinking im going to stop sharing these... Im not getting any quality feedback or sugguestions short of yours. But i guess theres no real point in posting art unless im giving it my all...
