Red ring of death on my Xbox360

How can i fix it, i've had my xbox for 4 years and this has never happened before. I play on it like 6 hours max a week

 

You could do the classic towel trick, that worked for me a few times when i had an old xbox. Aside from that the only real fix would be to buy a repair kit online and do it yourself which is just a pain.

Honestly, i would buy a new console.

 

I think it'll just be easier to buy another one, assuming you already tried that power supply junk that -could- and probably isn't the issue. I have a fat Xbox and granted it was collecting dust for most of its lifetime, I've been using it to play the free games and it works fine =]. With the new consoles coming out, I'd say just wait then buy it.

Or, upgrade to Playstation... or upgrade further to PC =]. #pushingmyagenda

Knowing Microsoft they probably designed it so all the 360s would break in time for X1 =] (jk)

That is what i was referring to.

You wrap it up in a large towel so that the the entire xbox is covered, depending on the issue, if its overheating causing the rod you would put it in the freezer for 10 minutes then unwrap and plug it in - if its just the rod you would wrap it up to heat it up.

 

How long was your warranty?

 

I am assuming he has the older model white version if he is saying 4 years ago. I agree with everyone that you should just invest in a new one if you aren't tech savvy. The first few runs of the original xbox 360's were doomed to fail due to bad heatsinks/chipsets.

No, the xbox could be so damaged it wouldn't work. In which case, it won't hurt the console to try.

Three red lights means it's a power issue.

By the solution i provided above. With older xbox's the rings are very inaccurate, you can try to completely unplug the power supply (cord to the xbox, cord to the power brick and cord to the wall), wait 10 minutes and try again but it will unlikely work.

 

Ok, i just realised my power brick's light has gone red instead of yellow, ill try what you said hopefully it will work

Why didn't you say it was three rings haha. Just let the power supply cool down.. unplug it and replug it...

If not, get a new power supply, if it is cheap.

DO NOT put electronics in moist environments...

 

A freezer is not "moist".

Putting a wet rag around a water bottle for 10 minutes wouldn't even freeze, you put it in the freezer to cool down the console, this has been successfully done for years by thousands of people.

 

I was just giving my two cents. I just wouldn't do it.

But freezers do tend to be moist, not everyone has some fancy expensive fridge that successfully keeps out moisture...

 

I've down the towel trick which works sometimes though a lot of the time it's temporary all you're doing is melting components. Cooling it down I definitely wouldn't recommend putting it in the freezer simply let it cool down.

On another note it's a temporary solution if successful because this method doesn't void the warranty (if you still have one)

If the above tricks don't work and you are thinking of just waiting til Next Gen consoles I suggest not waiting and just getting an xbox 360 slim. They seem to not have the issue with the red rings of death and the next-gen consoles won't have a lot of great games (at least not for a while) such as GTA5.
