Yeah I see where you're coming from. Idk where you live, but if you have an electronics store such as Best Buy or even the Apple store, then you could go there and try on various headphones for a "hands-on" trial/test. Also, Sennheiser is known to have some pretty good headphones so you might wanna check that brand out.

Be careful for Sennheiser. They make INCREDIBLE sounding headphones but a lot of them are designed for studio work and are clunky/awkward to wear outside.

Sennheiser, Grado, Akg, all make great headphones.

Avoid Bose because they are basically doing what Beats by dre are doing, by marketing mid end products as being high end.

If you want the best quality, you'll want to get all your music in a lossless format like FLAC.

Yeah what 'Amethyst' said. It doesn't matter if you have $1000 headphones - if your audio file is highly lossy like 192 (or below) - it won't be high quality at all.

Highest quality possible is FLAC or any lossless format like wav, alac etc.
On average, a file will be 40megs or so; so it's not practical for mobile players.

I just download a lossless file and transcode it to V0 or V2 (variable format) and it's perfect in terms of quality and space.

    I own these: (http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-M50-Professional-Monitor-Headphones/dp/B000ULAP4U)

They are not that expensive compared to other headphones with similar quality. I've had it for a few years and it's still working perfectly fine and the build quality is nice.
